After we chose this as our topic we began to conduct research.
We both knew a little about WWII but not as much as we needed so we started with finding general information around the topic. This included a couple documentaries on the subject, a timeline including important dates of wars along with changes of power and pacts or agreements made between countries. While doing this research we noticed that many of Winston Churchill's speeches were listed so we decided to find the audio and listen to a lot of them. We also checked out the series of books that were written by him but most of the content of them related to things outside of our topic. After we knew what exact events we were going to focus on we started collecting primary sources from these topics. There were many photographs and audiovisuals as the camera was starting to become popular around this time
period.
Although we were most likely going to do a website from the start because one of our members had done an NHD website two different years before and had great success with it. Our decision was reassured when we found a large amount of audio and photographs that would be essential in telling the story of our project. We started with making a rough thesis to help direct our project in one direction and then from that thesis made a more expanded outline with subsections and specific ideas in those sections. From there the next step was to create a rough draft of our website which would help us string together ideas with primary sources. The last step for us was putting everything onto the actual website and proofreading and revising text until we felt everything was as good as it could be.
Our project relates directly to the NHD theme of taking a stand in history. The 1930’s and 40’s were a time when a superpower was quickly taking over countries and mass amounts of land. With Neville Chamberlain resigning from office directly after the start of the war someone had to take a stand so that this reckoning force could be stopped. Winston Churchill was the one who helped Britain take a stand against a force that seemed unstoppable at the time.
