The Ink Drinker: A Short Story
The Ink Drinker

Cletus and Clem walked into school on the first day excited for a new year. Cletus was relieved that the summer was behind him, which had a lot of unusual events. If anybody found out about his odd habit, it would be a gruesome discovery.
“Is something wrong Cletus?” Clem suddenly asked.
“No I’m fine,” he replied. Putting his thoughts aside, Cletus walked into the school. After school, Cletus and Clem walked home and started on their homework, which was done with a cursory effort. Cletus decided that he would tell Clem about the strangest summer he had ever experienced. As soon as Cletus finished his story, Clem asked where the vampire was.
“I haven’t seen him since I left his cave,” Cletus responded.

He didn’t want anybody to know about the vampire, so he left some parts of the story out. Some people thought he was crazy; last year he barely did his homework and acted as if books would poison him. Nobody just changes their mind about things like these over the summer. But Cletus was known for his weird stories, which were almost always true. Over the next few weeks, everyone at the school, even the teachers and the principal, were surprised to see that Cletus was doing very well academically. They weren’t complaining though. Cletus was a big troublemaker in the past years. One day after school, Cletus and Clem were walking home when they saw Drakulink. Drakulink walked over to them very casually. Suddenly, he captured the kids and threw them in his car. The two boys were very frightened as the car kept driving. It was about a half hour later before the boys saw daylight again. Cletus knew where they were. It was Drakulink’s cave! Drakulink turned and faced the boys.
“I heard that both of you have been talking about what happened in the summer,” he began. “Cletus, I told you not to tell anybody about it.” Cletus and Clem were very scared.
“We’re very sorry, but everybody was wanting to know what happened to me. I never liked books, but now I can’t stop reading them,” Cletus

For the first time in a while, Montag realizes and accepts that he isn’t happy with his relationship or his job. While this is occurring, Clarisse also asks questions about society and what it used to be like. Montag is especially affected when Clarisse talks about how firemen used to put out fires instead of starting them. She asks questions about education and how if you don’t ask questions it’s “like a lot of funnels and a lot of water poured down the spout and out the bottom (page 30).” This tells us that society teaches kids so much information at once that it goes through on ear and out the other. Despite her curiosity, she is presumed as antisocial or not able to fit in when actually, other kids aren’t appreciating Clarisse’s knowledge. Montag is changed by this quality because you see him questioning society and how books shouldn’t be illegal by collecting literature from the houses that he burns. This quality from Clarisse is rubbing off on Montag drastically. Finally, the last way that Clarisse changes Montag is through thinking and reflecting. When Montag first met Clarisse, he realized that she thinks differently than other people in society, maybe a little too much, but it's a…
