The internet is an interesting place, one can find all manner of information, be entertainment all day, every hour, seven days a week, it allows us to connect with relatives or strangers all around the world, and it’s slowly damaging us. An author by the name of William Gibson wrote an article titled “The Net is a Waste of Time” published on July 14, 1996 in The New York Times; in the article William Gibson argues that soon the internet will be boring, used only for work and lack any form of fun or randomness. Madrigal poses the argument that big companies are controlling the platform called the web for their own. Madrigal in her article she states that companies are making their own form of platform to control the web. Google is an example of a platform created to search on the web now called the internet. Madrigal quotes an author by the name of Tim O’Reilly who had just seen a big company called Microsoft defeat its rival company and states “But a single monolithic approach, controlled by a single vendor, is no longer a solution, it's a problem.” Tim O’Reilly means that big companies are trying to get even bigger and control the web. The evidence provided helps prove Madrigals main argument, one piece of evidence was the creation of smartphones she states, “As smartphones took off, the amount of time that people spent on the truly open web began to dwindle.” She also states that multiple platforms made by other companies take peoples attention away from the web “most of the action occurs within platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and messaging apps, which all have carved space out of the open web”. The most used platforms are social medias, in an article titled “How Much Time Do People Spend on Social Media?” by Evan Asano published on January 4, 2017 states that “30% of all time spent online is now allocated to social media interaction” out of the nine hours spent online 30% of it is used on social media; this happens because “The social media platforms themselves are evolving their tools and options to further attract and engage new audiences” stated on the article titled “How much time do people spend on social media?” by Evan Asano.
