In the book The Jungle the main characters, jurgis and ona, are put through many hard times from the start. The classes were separated during immigration. The wealthy most of the time never had to go through inspection; people just assumed that they were free of disease and fit to be a citizen. The working class had to go through many tests and inspections and some were not able to make it through and would probably never be able to see their families again. Other early problems of the corrupt america that Ona and Jurgis ran into was durning renting a home for them and all of the other family members that have came along with them. They were taken advantage of when their real estate agent showed them a house and lied to them, they could only pay for what was offered to them.
