The KWL Teaching Idea Strategy
The KWL teaching idea strategy guided my thinking by forcing me to acknowledge what I already knew about the topic (activated my prior knowledge about the topic). Once I realized what I already thought that I knew (established a purpose for reading I desired to learn more about the United States. Therefore, I explored further by reading/reviewing the content and facts inside of the book titled “States and Capitals”. While doing so, I learned more facts about the states that I had already done research on and new information about states that I had not conducted research on.
During the reading of my selection, I used the traditional form of KWL to expand my original thoughts and concerns about the topic. This teaching strategy helped me to revise some of my original thoughts and brought clarity, where my mind was clouded

So much so, that I decided to conduct further research online regarding the accuracy of the information within the book and the time that has passed, since the book has been created. I did find that the book was published in 2014, a couple of years ago. As a result, the population size of each state could have either increased or decreased. So, it was a good idea to use KWL traditional teaching strategy, because it pushed me to not only find answers using the book, but to also use the informational literacy skills that I have learned in school and along the way to find up-to-date data regarding topics of interest and informational text such as newspaper and magazine articles. So, I also learned that this approach can be used/applied to multiple literacies. Other strategies that I thought about using from Chapter 5 include Say Something and the Interactive Notation System to Effective Reading and Thinking (INSERT). I wonder if I would have gotten the same results using those teaching strategy

    One of the U.S. educational challenges of today is meeting the educational needs of the English language learners. This growing diverse population of English learners has to simultaneously learn to build their English language proficiency and the content area within their grade level standard.
