Major Ferguson of the Loyalist Militia was tasked with raising and organizing Loyalist units from the backcountry of South Carolina to help prtotect the British General Cornwallis. Ferguson gathered a few Tory units and marched towards Gilbert Town, North Carolina, where he set up a base camp. He issued a command to the opposition forces to lay down their weapons. If they refused he stated he would, "lay waste to their country with fire and sword." Patriot militia leaders John Sevier and Isaac Shelby sent word to William Campbell in Virginia to aid an attack on Major Ferguson. Many more more militiamen and local gunmen were rallied by the Patriot leaders. These some 1,400 men became what was known as the "Mountain Men". Among these hundreds of men were two traitors who deserted the Patriots and ran off the Gilbert Town to alert Ferguson of the mass of militia converging on him. The Major called for a full retreat to Charlotte, and requested reinforcements for General Cornwallis. The message did not reach Cornwallis until a day after the battle. The Patriot militia recieved word of Ferguson's retreat and urged on to try to catch him. Instead of reaching Charlotte, Ferguson's force camped at King's Mountain where they set camp just west of the mountain's highest point. In a rush to reach the Loyalist regime the Patriots sent over 900 men on horseback throughout the night and the next morning until they reached King's Mountain. The Mountain Men surrounded the camp and attacked.…

Being unhappy should be enjoyed by everyone. We must experience a wide range of emotions in order to learn how to handle everything life throws at us. According to Bernard in Brave New World, ‘[he would] rather be unhappy than have the sort of false, lying happiness that he was having here”, (179) this quote means that he would rather be unhappy than live in a happy lie. This book describes a utopian world yet there’s a quote in the book that is in direct conflict with the “utopian” world they are living in.…

The person I was in the early ages had very low amounts of people to depend on for help, needing someone to talk to, and friends were all running low. Eventually, as the years passed I ran along a bunch of friends, new family members, I saw my soccer ball as a friend and not as an object, my family started to reunite once again, and then that special someone came along. The quote says, “That seems to be the way of things. Everyone takes, everyone gives. Life is like that.” at this point Siddhartha is talking to the merchant; apparently the merchant lives off of the goods of others and Siddhartha believes that is basically what life really is. The second quote I chose was written by Hesse, “You have chosen a splendid life…” this part of the book Siddhartha is talking to the Ferryman about how he chose a wonderful life living by the river. Furthermore, I chose this quote that represented me because I really do not regret anything I have done in order to be the person I am now; I love the life I live no matter what anybody says because I worked hard to be…

After the English king dies leaving no heir, in the churchyard of a cathedral in London, a sword appears imbedded in a stone inscribed, "Who so pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil is rightwise king born of England." Although many try, no one can budge the sword from the stone. Deep in the dark woods, kind, but absent-minded Merlin the Magician begins to teach 11-year-old Arthur, who is called Wart, and lives in the castle of Sir Ector where he's an apprentice squire to burly, oafish Sir Kay -- when he's not washing stacks of pots and pans in the scullery. By being changed by Merlin into various animals, Wart learns the basic truths of life, but he also runs into the evil Madam Mim, who tries to destroy him. Merlin and Mim have a Wizards' Duel, during which each changes into various creatures, with Merlin using his wits to win. On New Year's Day, a great tournament is held in London to pick a new king. Wart, attending as Kay's squire, forgets Kay's sword, and runs back to the inn to get it, but the inn is locked. Wart, seeing the sword in the stone, innocently, and easily, pulls it out. When the knights marvel at the wondrous sword and question where he got it, Wart has to prove himself all over again, and again he pulls the sword from the stone. Wart is proclaimed king by the marveling warriors.…

The Battle of Stone’s River, also known as the Battle of Murfreesboro, was fought in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and was the eighth costliest battle of the Civil War. The battle took place on December 26th, 1862 through January 5th, 1863; the Union declared victory on January 5th, but the bloodiest parts of the battle took place on December 31st through January 2nd. Although the Confederate Army seemed to have the upper hand in the beginning of the battle because they attacked first, inflicting heavy casualties on the Union side, the Union Army ultimately won the Battle of Stone’s River after forcing the Confederate troops back at Stone’s River, compelling them to retreat from Murfreesboro, and allowing the Union to gain control over Tennessee for the Union army, which boosted morale for the Emancipation Proclamation as well as the Union soldiers; proving the importance of each side’s disposition throughout the war.…

Throughout history humankind has been trying to define happiness. What is it exactly and how do we obtain it? We always think that happiness is a place to be or a destination and technically, that is the main premise or goal of our lives; to obtain happiness. So our whole lives go by from the minute were born to the last breath we take in a quest to work hard in order to reach that destination. Naturally, many philosophical writers have jumped on the bandwagon and put in their two cents of their views on the matter of happiness. Alexander Pope talks about the relationship and purpose man has to the universe in An Essay on Man, Voltaire wrote about living in blind optimism with a false notion of happiness in Candide, and Samuel Johnson wrote The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia, in which the main characters are on a quest to find happiness.…

Moreover, each character’s happiness is affected differently. In “Berry”, due to a simple accident which Berry tried to prevent he was happily fired from his job that he was underpaid to do. “Get rid of him- today the stupid nigger!” as seen on page 165 in A World of Prose. It was seen earlier in the story that Berry went hungry for weeks and needed money and food and in the times of racial America (in which this story takes place) it was much harder for a black to gain employment.…

The two views both have their advantages and disadvantages. Imagine two men walking down a street. The man on the left is smiling. It is thunderstorming yet he’s got a skip in his step like Dorothy down a yellow brick road. The one on the right is frowning. Grumpily walking, he kicks a small dog in his path. Obviously these examples are exaggerated but the point is, it’s a much easier and carefree life when you are an optimist. The ability to see the positive in all situation is certainly a desired trait.…
