Bernard Brave New World Quote Analysis
Being unhappy should be enjoyed by everyone. We must experience a wide range of emotions in order to learn how to handle everything life throws at us. According to Bernard in Brave New World, ‘[he would] rather be unhappy than have the sort of false, lying happiness that he was having here”, (179) this quote means that he would rather be unhappy than live in a happy lie. This book describes a utopian world yet there’s a quote in the book that is in direct conflict with the “utopian” world they are living in. What could happiness and unhappiness mean to people? According to dictionaries, happiness means good fortune, pleasure and joy. Unhappiness means sad, miserable, and unlucky. Each person has his or her own definition of happiness and …show more content…
According to my own experiences, I lost two of my precious best friends and they taught me really good lessons before leaving me, they taught me how to never trust any kind of person because they were taught that way and told me to never trust anyone, because now or later they are going to stab your back. One of my other experiences was that moment that my grand-mother left us, before her death, she used to tell us “I don’t want to leave all of you feeling sad, in my death I want to see all of you smiling”. When she left us, she left everyone smiling. Even in her funeral, people celebrated like it was a wedding and not a funeral. Unhappiness is showed by everyone. Nobody has a perfect life. Even in a utopia there’s unhappiness when there’s supposed to be happiness. As shown in Brave New World’s utopia in the World State, John loses his mother Linda due to her wanting happiness by taking Soma, which ends up killing her, the feeling for John was that he was suffering and ended up killing himself due to the unhappiness he felt during this tragic

In the article “Happiness: Enough Already” the author Sharon Begley draws up the argument that happiness may be the ultimate goal in life for many people, but too much happiness can also be as what she describes as “the end of the drive for ever-greater heights of happiness” (page number). Throughout the article Begley conveys that happiness is not always for the best, and that sometimes sadness and negativity brings out the best in a person. Begley proves her point by exploiting the negative views of happiness. Begley suggest that happiness is not instilled in a person for a long time because “negative emotion evolved for a reason” (page number). Begley then moves forward to better prove her explanation by emphasizing successful artists who…

Sharon Begley in “Happiness: Enough Already” argues that being extremely happy may be a goal of anybody but it also can be “the end of the drive for ever-greater heights of happiness” (455). Begley claims that “being happier is not always better” (455) and an excessive happiness may affect badly to people’s life. She points out that people who reach the highest level of happiness don’t feel motivated to move forward since they are already satisfied. The author goes on insists that happiness does not last long because “negative emotion evolved for a reason” (456). She presents many cases of famous people who experienced negative emotions to create their well-known works showing the need of sadness in every lifetime. Furthermore, people desire to gain more and more happiness causing them the fear to experience sadness. Therefore, what they once considered normal sadness is regarded as a psychiatric illness now. The author then concludes that everything would be much better if “the single-minded pursuit of happiness as an end in itself” (458).…

What is true happiness? This is an important question that is related to Brave New World, a novel by Aldous Huxley. This book was written right after the first automobile was mass-produced, the Model T Ford. This assembly line production sparked Aldous' mind into thinking if humans were produced in the same way. When Aldous imagined this he thought that the world would be quite different and he decided to write a satire on present day culture. He thought that a world like this would be in a certain state of happiness. The residents of World State A.F. 632 are not truly happy. Instead they live a life of instant gratification, or a fleeting moment of happiness that ends quickly. Also they have no adversities in their life so they are never truly…

In a Brave New World, we learn that the act of being unhappy is prohibited, and if caught in such a state that you will most likely be banned. Similar situations can be seen in today’s society, maybe not as strict. If someone is seen as unhappy (depending on what state of unhappiness they are in) they can be sent away to a facility to seek help or see a physiatrist. Another similarity we see is the use of drugs. When people are in an unhappy state, they may turn to the use of drugs to alternate…

Happiness varies depending on who you are. There is materialistic happiness, which is a short, brief moment of joy that will not last you long. In Fahrenheit 451, people only think they are happy because materials have become distractions from the real world. These distractions are only temporary. There is situational happiness, which is much like materialistic happiness. Situational happiness is brief with little time to offer. An example would be when Clarisse looks up at the moon. That is one small spark. Finally, there is happiness over hardship. This is the truest form of joy. When life is hard, yet pulling through it cheerful is the only option. Although society is messed up, and there is a war going on, Clarisse still remains positive and continues to do her abnormal routines. The truth is, life is full of hardship. There is no joy if one does not see this. If one censors themselves from the world, they will never experience the whole making of it. They will miss out on the feeling of overcoming those obstacles. They will miss out on the joy received from relief, the joy received after sadness when a friend does goofy stuff just to be cheerful. When one shields their eyes from the bad they miss a lot of the good. Montag realized that he had been shielding himself from the bad when he realized how much of the good he was missing. He realized he was not happy in his planned…

This quote talks about how both Bernard and John feel alone in the society and John always thought in Bernard's world no one was alone. Which makes sense because even if you live in a perfect community or perfect world there will always be a few people that don't feel like they belong. I feel like the reason most people in Bernard's world feel like they belong is because they have soma and soma gets rid of all the feelings people don't won't like feeling sad unwanted scared any of those emotions, but Bernard doesn't take soma. Even if people live different we all feel the same emotions and I feel like the writer tried to show that in the quote. (121)…

According the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of Happiness is being pleased, being satisfied, and being lucky (Oxford Dictionary). According to a health website “Positive Med,” there are six major emotions which include anger, fear, surprise, disgust, happiness, and sadness. According to this, happiness only occurs…

The novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky draws two impossible scenarios that together highlight the everyday reality of the potential conflicts between one's own happiness and the happiness of others. First imagine a world that is a utopia except that it is built upon the suffering of a single child. Then imagine a person who is willing to sacrifice the rest of the world in order to secure his own well-being. The question, one we face on a daily basis whether we contemplate it or not, is how we experience and value our own happiness in relation to the happiness of others.…

Because the uniformity of all people creates stability, the brave new world seems to be perfect. No one needs to live in a state of desire as they should always be able to fulfill their wishes. If they cannot have that satisfaction, they risk feeling disappointed or sad. A horrible fate in this world is to live through periods of desire and fulfillment (Diken 155). The people in this world must maintain feelings of happiness at all times. However, humans are supposed to make the best of the worst situations (Huxley 236). By learning to find peace in times of unimaginable stress, people gain wisdom. Experiencing various emotions are part of the human experience. Thus, people should not be happy all the time.
