The Lady or the Tiger
By: Frank Stockton This story leaves the reader filled with curiosity. The author doesn’t make the conclusion, or ending, very clear, and instead, leaves the reader to decide how they perceive, or want the story to end. “And so I leave it with all of you! Which came out of the opened door-the lady, or the tiger?”(page ) If I had to make a prediction to guess the result, I would think it was the tiger that came out by the clues/hints throughout the storyline. The ruler of the village has a very interesting way of punishing criminals, and people from the town can even choose to watch- if they are brave enough to watch a horrendous scene or watch a hilarious event that is unexpected to happen, unless they may already know what will happen-of course. The king’s lover stood in the audience knowing which was behind the two doors. She also knew who the lady was-the most fairest and loveliest of the damsels of who could have been selected as the reward of the accused youth, and she hated this lady. So the most probable or reasonable outcome would be that she wanted him to suffer rather than for him to marry and fall in love with a women whom she despised. I still wonder why the author made the ending the way it was. I think this story shows how your actions could possibly cost you your life. After reading this story, I will always think carefully about what I do- what is right and what is wrong. Although this story is described as in a semi-barbaric village, it still shows a very meaningful message. I really enjoyed this story and it can really teach someone an important lesson to make their decisions in life wisely.

The princess in “The Lady or the Tiger” struggles when determining the youth’s fate either consisting of death or marriage to another beautiful lady as she contemplates “Which [door to open. The answer is] as plain to her as if [the youth] shouted it from where he stood. There was not an instant to be lost. The question [of which door to open] was asked in a flash; it must be answered in another” (Stockton 302). The princess is forced to decide the youth’s fate in a split second. The short amount of time that is taken for her to make her decision suggests that her emotions may have overruled reason and could lead to her regretting her decision later in life. In a single second, lives could be drastically changed. Up until the last moment, the youth, that the princess had loved, believes that she will spare him; he has a blind faith in the princess and trusts in her choices. The king’s daughter’s heart is torn during this point of decision. She must decide whether she would prefer to see the youth dead or with the lady whom she…

Because she is clearly in love with him, she seems to stand firm on her opinion that the thought of another woman being with him is sickening. Finally, the princess believes that it would be less complicated if he were to die so that she may see him again in the afterlife. The princess was repulsive toward the idea of the ‘young man’ being with another woman. Therefore, if he were to die by the hands (or paws; tee hee) of the tiger, then they could be together in the afterlife. Furthermore, it was illegal for a servant/peasant to be in love with the princess; therefore, making the decision easier. If the two lovers cannot be together while they were alive, then they could be together in the afterlife when the two of them had both passed. In conclusion, the princess signaled for the ‘young man’ to open the door with the tiger because: the princess was semi-barbaric and relished in the sight of blood/violence, she was more afraid of seeing the ‘young man’ with another woman, and they could simply be with one another in the afterlife (due to the laws that outlaw all romance between royalty and non-royalty.) So the next person that is to read the shocking story, choose correctly when given the honoring opportunity to select the…

Throughout english literature many topics have been discussed, from the typical “good v.s. evil” concept, to the more interesting and compelling ideas such as the thoughts of the insane. These are the stories that really grab the attention of the reader and leave them questioning what they may or amy not believe about certain ideas. Strong stories like these are the ones that make true impressions. Stories are often over dramatized with their characters and the abilities that they posses. Most books have the childish theme of “good guy beats bad guy” but some times a story can tackle much more adult, darker and thought-provoking, and contradictory of topics, such as the value of human life. Both “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and “The Child by Tiger” by Thomas Wolfe have similar but unique themes of darkness and death, as well as similar conflicts and although the characters are fictional the ideas couldn’t be more real.…

The entire time I was reading this story I couldn’t decide how I felt. The very first paragraph draws you in when the narrator mentions the day he discovered the man in the well. It’s immediately mentioned how the man calls out for help, but then skips to how the boy and his friends thought it was important that they decided not to save him. This paragraph almost immediately forces you to do a double take. When you first start reading and hear about the man trapped in the well your mind automatically starts thinking about how you would get him out. So when the narrator mentions how they not only left him in the well but are also okay with their decision you can’t help but cringe. Why would you not help the man out of the well? This completely goes against my moral code; even reading about it makes me frustrated. But of course the main characters are children of a pretty young age, so shortly after reading about there decision to leave the man I realized that I was trying to convince myself that its okay, that they didn’t know any better. But how could they not? At any age you know about the value of life and you learn about danger.…
