The Lady or the Tiger by Frank R. Stockton (1834 – 1902)

This paper addresses the Psychoanalytic Approach of Sigmund Freud. In particular, the paper talks about the different basic concepts of Freud like human nature, instincts, Theory of personality, mind’s structure and anxiety that affects a human behavior. These basic concepts will be a great help to uncover the psychological makeup or hidden motives of the character, specifically the semibarbaric princess in the story.
This short story long time ago was about a semibarbaric King who was very powerful that he himself only decides how things are to be done. The King created a public arena where he lays the fate of a person accused to a crime. It is the King’s semibarbaric method of justice. The accused is given the privileged to select one of the two doors. Behind one door was a tiger that would devour and tear into pieces the guilty and behind the other was a beautiful maiden who would marry the innocent.
The semibarbaric King had a semibarbaric daughter who fell in love with a young brave and handsome man. The young man was just a commoner and the King was not pleased about it when he found out their relationship, so he throws his daughter’s lover to the prison and was scheduled to a public trial on the arena where two doors await for him. When the appointed day arrived, people gathered in the public arena. The King, his court and the princess were on the opposite side of the twin doors sat up high their throne. When the King gave the signal, the young lovers exchanged a meaningful glance. The princess moved her right hand to signal her lover to go to the right door. And without hesitation, the young man moved towards the right door and opened it. The author also included the story where the only semibarbaric princess knew what lays behind the two doors and who the maiden behind one door was. She was a beautiful maiden whom the semibarbaric princess hated

Within this story, the royal family is given distinguishing traits that explain why the princess would choose death upon her lover. Because she is the daughter of a “semi-barbaric king” (Stockton 2), the thought of her companion getting eaten by a tiger might be more accepting than losing him to another woman. The princess’s uncivilized mind would overrule the appropriate decision, and choose the tiger.…

Another aspect I do not agree with in this paper is the many references to Sigmund Freud’s studies. Sigmund Freud, although influential to many concepts, is no longer a credible source for a scholarly paper because of the many inaccuracies in his works. I recommend including the concepts of other theorists and researchers to add to his claims to further support the thesis. There are many recent sources and concepts to include along with the well-known ideas of Sigmund Freud.…

The princess in “The Lady or the Tiger” struggles when determining the youth’s fate either consisting of death or marriage to another beautiful lady as she contemplates “Which [door to open. The answer is] as plain to her as if [the youth] shouted it from where he stood. There was not an instant to be lost. The question [of which door to open] was asked in a flash; it must be answered in another” (Stockton 302). The princess is forced to decide the youth’s fate in a split second. The short amount of time that is taken for her to make her decision suggests that her emotions may have overruled reason and could lead to her regretting her decision later in life. In a single second, lives could be drastically changed. Up until the last moment, the youth, that the princess had loved, believes that she will spare him; he has a blind faith in the princess and trusts in her choices. The king’s daughter’s heart is torn during this point of decision. She must decide whether she would prefer to see the youth dead or with the lady whom she…

Because she is clearly in love with him, she seems to stand firm on her opinion that the thought of another woman being with him is sickening. Finally, the princess believes that it would be less complicated if he were to die so that she may see him again in the afterlife. The princess was repulsive toward the idea of the ‘young man’ being with another woman. Therefore, if he were to die by the hands (or paws; tee hee) of the tiger, then they could be together in the afterlife. Furthermore, it was illegal for a servant/peasant to be in love with the princess; therefore, making the decision easier. If the two lovers cannot be together while they were alive, then they could be together in the afterlife when the two of them had both passed. In conclusion, the princess signaled for the ‘young man’ to open the door with the tiger because: the princess was semi-barbaric and relished in the sight of blood/violence, she was more afraid of seeing the ‘young man’ with another woman, and they could simply be with one another in the afterlife (due to the laws that outlaw all romance between royalty and non-royalty.) So the next person that is to read the shocking story, choose correctly when given the honoring opportunity to select the…

In the story, “The Tiger or the Lady” by Frank Stockton”, a young handsome man, whom the princess was in loved with, was accused of committing the horrible crime of loving the beautiful, barbaric princess. Therefore, he was sent to the King’s Arena, where he shall be put to death. The “semi- barbaric king” (1) found that this joy of human torture was most genial, bringing great pleasure to his hateful heart and empty soul. Now in this court justice system, if the accused were placed in the arena, his fate was decided by to wooden doors. Behind one door was a vicious, lethal tiger, and behind the other was a beautiful maiden. If a person were to choose the door holding the tiger, they would be immediately eaten and considered guilty (1); but if the suspect were to open the door containing the woman the accused person would then be considered innocent, (2) and the two would then marry, having a celebration in his honor. His loving princess has directed him open the door on the right, but the question is which door is it? I believe that because of the princess’s barbaric moiety, jealousy, and hatred that she has pointed to the door with the vicious man- eating tiger with her boyfriend dying a horrible painful death.…

The first analysis will be from the view of psychodynamics using Freud’s ideas on personality. For this analysis I will begin with the structure of Blanche’s personality in regards to the Id, which is the aspect of personality that deals with the instincts, the Ego, which is the rational aspect of the personality, and the Superego, which is the moral aspect of personality. The second analysis will be from the perspective of Abraham Maslow; I will use Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and his assumptions about people’s human nature in the process of the analysis.…
