The Lesson By Joan Didion Analysis
When Joan Didion said that the “lesson” of her story is that it is distinctly possible to remain too long at the fair, she meant that you may enjoyed your time there, there is a time where you want to go home. In her essay I think she was talking about how it was fun in New York for a time, then there came a time when she just wanted to leave.
In the story it gives several times where she couldn’t go into some places because she was so tired of going to them. “There were certain parts of the city which I had to avoid. I could not bear upper Madison Avenue on weekday mornings.” This shows that she thinks the fair metaphor is very true, and that after you’ve lived in New York for awhile It does get old.
