Duality of Human Nature
Sometimes people say one thing, then contradict themselves by doing another. In both
Lotteries there are examples of dual human nature. In Chris Abani’s Lottery, his aunt is very religious, to the point of preaching to strangers on the street, he says: “ Her religious fanaticism, which sometimes prompted her to proselytize, embarrassingly, to complete strangers.” (Abani 1
). Later when the mob is doing their “justice” she joins in and burns this person that may be innocent. The entire mob shows duality, they believe that burning this man is actually the holy thing to do, that this is saving the man from burning in hell, when really, isn’t killing someone a sin in itself? In Shirley Jackson’s Lottery The townspeople are religious and some are just seemingly good people, but every year they stone a person to ensure that their crops will grow, and they do this with no proof that the sacrifice really helps, but every year they continue to kill a person just out of tradition.
