The Love In The Wife Of Bath's Tale
For this assignment, I had to read the Wife of Bath, this story was a very powerful short story written from the perspective of a knight. The Knight was riding his horse all alone when he came across a virgin by the river and raped her. The king found out about this incident and wanted to kill the knight. The queen gave the knight 12 months and 1 day to find out what women desired the most. The knight went from town to town asking women what they desire most, but he could not find the answer that he was looking for. It seemed as every woman had a different answer, some wanted clothes, some wanted money, and others wanted protection. He just couldn’t find the answer that the strict queen had asked him to find. The answer was so difficult …show more content…
As he approached them, they faded into one old woman. So then he asked her, “What is it that women most desire.” and she said, “If I tell you, you have to do whatever I ask.” The knight was so happy that he didn’t care that the deal was going to be inscrutable, so he just said “Yes, I’ll do whatever you ask”. The day came when he had told the queen what women desired most and he brought the old woman along with him. Once the queen asked him “What is it woman most desire.” he replied, “Women wish to have power.” The queen said that no woman could disagree, peasant or queen they both want power. The queen spared the knights life, but now he must do what the old lady wants him to do. The old lady said she wants him to marry her and take her to bed, the knight wanted to detest her at that moment because he thought it was crazy that she wanted him to marry her. He had to keep his word, so he married her. Later that night they were in bed and the old lady gave him a proposal, she said, “You can choose to have me be old like I am, but very loyal, or very beautiful and disloyal.” The Knight did not know what to choose. He was so torn with this decision so he said, “I give you the power to choose for me.” Since he gave the old lady the one thing that women desire

In the Wife of Bath and in the Pardoner there are many similariries and differences between the two tales. In the tales one of the similarities is that they both have experienced the world. There is one difference between them just in traveling around the world because the Wife of Bath experienced the world by traveling and also in a sexual sense. She goes on for a while in her tale about how she would be the best person to talk about marriage and how you can make it work, or how it wont work. And she states that she ahs the right to say this because she has been married fiive times, and she knows what will and wont work in a marriage. One of the big reasons that she said all of this is so that she can destroy the idea that men are the dominate species and they have a strong power over women, and that if women are given everything that they need, want, and desire, then thhey will be willing to do anything that their husbands want and they will be faithful to them always. While these stories are exptremly different in what they are talking about there are still a few things that they have in common. The Pardoner is all about the journey to canterbury and how they decidd to make the journey a little more bearable so they decided to have a story telling contest. So they decided have each of the men tell a story on their way to canterbury and on their way back and the Inn keeper will decide on the winner. Except for the fact that they never got to finsh their stories on the way back becase the…

In order to save his life, the Knight was required to come up with the answer to one question: What is the thing that women most desire? He was given a year and a day to derive an answer and it came down to the last day. He came across an old woman and she made him promise to do whatever she asked and by night time he would have his answer. Desperate for an answer, the Knight agreed to this and sure enough the old woman asked him to marry her. This is amusing – one of the credentials to win the contest – because never in a million years would the Knight have thought the woman was going to ask for that. When it came time for them to make love to each other, the Knight simply could not do it. This is also amusing – trying to picture a knight lying in bed next to an old woman. However, this leads into how to the story is instructive as well – another one of the qualities to win the contest.…

I heard the murmur of their voices as I crossed the hall; the newly wedded couple had just sat down for dinner together, they had arrived only an hour ago. I entered the room to see Rebecca, her dark ash-brown hair, flowing like silk as it trailed down behind her dainty, gentle shoulders. I just couldn’t help to think, what kind of woman she was. I set down the plates, not speaking a word to either Sir or the new Madam; I was not in a position to talk to either of them, as that was not my responsibility. Madame, was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She seemed so comfortable being herself. She was so lovely, so accomplished, so amusing. This was my first meeting with her, and already I was in awe of her. She had the perfect breeding to be Sir’s wife, she was incredibly beautiful and as time went I on, I realised she had the brains and confidence to outwit anyone. She was entirely different to the second Mrs De Winter.…

The “General Prologue” describes the Wife of Bath as an extremely powerful woman who is valued highly in society and is above many on the social scale “In all the parish not a dame dared stir Towards the alter steps in front of her” (459-460). The Wife of Bath, here, is presented as an intimidating woman who lets no one come before her, leaving a sense of independence and confidence imprinted in the readers’ minds. But this confidence does not root from inside her as described by the “General Prologue”. This confidence roots from other sources as shown in her tale and prologue. These sources are men, and their impressions and thoughts of her, causing the independent air about her as mentioned in the “General Prologue” to be a false one. Another way in which her independent air is erased is the fact that the Wife of Bath has had five husbands, all of which she has described in her prologue. She tells readers of the relationships and what happened in them. She said, “You say also that it displeases me Unless you praise and flatter my beauty, And save you gaze upon my face” (110). Without compliments from her man, she is displeased. This alone demonstrates insecurity and lack…

The feminist tale begins with the Wife of Bath telling the pilgrims about her “mastery over her [five] husband[s].” She then tells an ironic tale to show that women do dominate men. The main female characters in her tale exhibit the same feminist characteristics of the Wife of Bath. In the tale, where chivalry is a knight’s code, a maiden is raped by a knight. Soon after King Arthur finds out about the knight’s evil deed and orders for “the knight to lose his head.” The wife then “implore[s] the king to exercise his grace,” so the king does and “grant[s] her [the knight’s] life.” The irony of the wife having control over a man’s fate stuns the audience but not as abundant as the king giving her the power to determine the knight’s fate. The wife then gives the knight a chance to save his life by sending him on quest to find out what “women most desire.” The poignant knight departs onto his quest and soon finds a crone who says she will give him the answer, but under the condition that he give her his hand in marriage. He agrees and the crone gives him the answer: “A women wants the self-same sovereignty over her husband as over her lover, and master him.” The crone then request for his hand in front of the court, so the knight is forced to give his hand. Ironically, it is now the knight’s body being forced to the crone like he forced the maidenhead.…

There once lived a chief's daughter who had many relations. All the young men in the village wanted to have her for wife, and were all eager to fill her skin bucket when she went to the brook for water. There was a young man in the village who was industrious and a good hunter; but he was poor and of a mean family. He loved the maiden and when she went for water, he threw his robe over her head while he whispered in her ear:"Be my wife. I have little but I am young and strong. I will treat you well, for I love you." For a long time the maiden did not answer, but one day she whispered back. "Yes, you may ask my father's leave to marry me. But first you must do something noble. I belong to a great family and have many relations. You must go on a war party and bring back the scalp of an enemy."…

In the fourteen century, men were always the superior, head of the household, the breadwinner, but women were always inferior, they would stay at home, do the house work, cook, and never would have a job. Well, times have changed. Women are reaching an equal status to men in political, social and economic matters, it’s part of the idea called Feminism. In many ways, does the Wife of Bath, display many characteristic of women in the 21st century, who instead of being directed by men, she views herself as an independent person. Throughout her introduction of the tale, and the story itself, we see the Wife of Bath as an experienced, intellectual woman, who despite in a world of patriarchal power, she provides for herself financially, emotionally, and physically. As a feminist icon, she confronts serious social issues, that illustrate the subjugation that women faced.…
