People’s ability to show hate and discriminate has unfortunately been a staple in human history. Pre-1954, in American culture, it was completely normal to segregate people based on their race, religion, etc. This shows how humans are capable of pushing other people away in order to promote their own benefit. White Americans wanted segregation in order to keep their own jobs, communities, and even schools from other competition. For example, colonial Americans were subjugated to the oppression of the imperialistic ideals of the British government. 66,000 British and Americans alike died for the idea that groups of people can be subjugated in order to fuel the greed of a centralized power. This shows how greed can cloud the minds of people because they gain the capability to harm the people below them. Another example of people being harmed by greed is the African slave trade. Countless cultures have been destroyed by expanding nations in order to keep up trade quotas. This shows how greed can force oppression upon others due to an obsession to out do a competitor. Also greed will give false justification, such as “the white man’s burden,” to get support for their cause to expand their oppression.
