Explain the various major areas of psychology. Developmental psychology refers to the changes that come with age. It compares people of different ages, and tracks individuals over time. Researchers in this area study the ways in which people mature and change over the life span. Recognizing that human development is a lifelong process, other developmental psychologists study the changes that occur throughout adulthood. Still others specialize in the study of age, even the process of dying (Zimbardo & Johnson, 2009, pg. 30). Cognitive refers to the process of knowing and encompasses nearly the entire range of conscious and unconscious mental processes sensation and perception conditioning and learning, attention and consciousness, sleep and dreaming, memory and forgetting, reasoning and decision making, imaging, problem solving and language (Zimbardo & Johnson, 2009, pg. 28).
