1. Allegory: (page. 366) a narrative that is really a double story. One is going to be literal and the other is going to have a lot of symbolism
2. Symbolism
-------------------------------------------------
* No one would help the needy (infected) because they were terrified of the consequence of the plague * Prince Prospero: eccentric person (unique, rare) * Huge mansion, locked (you can’t come in and you can’t come out) protecting everybody from the outside world * Enough food, entertainment (wealthy) * They were in there for 5 or 6 months already * All 7 rooms are painted in a specific color and everything matches (Blue, Purple, Orange, Green, White, Violet) except the 7th due it was black with red window panes * The colored rooms could symbolize the circle of life and the cycle of the day (the light and vivid colors representing life or day and the black room death or night) * The black room with the scarlet color gives a mood of suspense, anxiety (this room represents death) * Within the black room there’s a clock that stops the happiness and the joy of the party (Symbolizes the passage of time or reality and demonstrates how terrified the guests are of it) * The clock foreshadows the time left until their death * Prince Prospero was so bizarre in his fashion that some people though he was mad and had to go and get to know him to confirm he’s not * They’re masquerade costume can symbolize the death of the people outside * Each time the clock chimes, the dreams traveling through the rooms freeze * When the clock chimes at midnight the guests notice a mysterious figure which arouses disgust and horror in them due to his outright disgusting costume * He uses the Red Death to show that nobody can escape death because it will eventually come to you * Literal story: A group of people retire to an abbey to escape the plague but they re unsuccessful and end up dying * Symbolic story: no matter where you go, how many money you have or whatever you death will come * The mysterious person apparently has a costume that looks exactly like a corpse and has blood stains (this makes people nervous because it could be the plague) * He turns out to be the Red Death and everybody dies * This demonstrates that no matter how wealthy the prince was, he was not able to keep out the plague (he was ignorant by thinking he could do so) * Prince Prosperous: name symbolizes success and it’s ironic because he dies first and he does not succeed in cheating death * Guests represent the people that are dying in the plague which is ironic because they’re partying while outside there’s a lot of people dying * The party is an allusion because people are dying outside and these people inside are acting as if everything’s ok * The 7 rooms are alluded to the 7 stages of man by Shakespeare * Rooms symbolize 7 sins, the colors of the rainbow, the stages of life, the rising of the sun and the setting of the night * The black room represents death, reality * Clock (it’s in the black room) symbolizes how much time is left in life, the time until they’re death (reality check). It foreshadows that something bad will happen because otherwise why would the people react * Nobody could get in or out – foreshadows bad might happen * Red death: literally it’s the plague and symbolically is that you can’t escape death (theme) * Moments of suspension (anxiety): when the clock chimes, when the mysterious person appears and when the prince dies * Climax: when the prince dies

In October of 1347, a ship of dying sailors entered the port of Messina on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. These men were infected with the plague and died within a few days. Within 3 months of their landing, the plague had penetrated the interior of France and North Africa. Through the seaports and rivers, the plague wound its way west and north via established shipping routes. Before summer in 1348 this deadly malady has reached both Italy and the deepest interior regions of France. By the fall it had invaded Hungary via the Alps and crossed the English Channel to infect Southern England. After a brief period of winter dormancy, the plague resumed in Paris the following spring and quickly spread. Ireland…

When the plague first reached Europe, people panicked. In hopes of survival, many began to abandon what they had and moved to villages and country sides in hope of fleeing from the disease. “Children abandoned the father, husband abandoned the wife, wife the husband, one brother the other, one sister the other…. Some fled to villas, others to villages in order to get a change in air. Where there had been no [plague], there they carried it; if it was already there, they caused it to increase” (trace De Hahn). The horror that people in Europe were feeling was traumatic to their state of mind. People often left those who they cared about to fend for themselves. Since the cities were more populated, those who left for the country carried the disease with them and infected those who previously lived on the countryside. The Black Death created a race for survival and all were playing.…

Fear of the Plague mainly came from people not knowing what the cause of the Plague was; this fear seems to become even more uncertain as the best doctors, scientist, or even the educated do not know the cause of the Plague. This Erasmus of Rotterdam (doc# 2) sees this fear, as he seems to blame the cause of the Plague in England because of the filth on the street. Another example of how fear occurred during the plague was in Pepys (doc# 13) rich people used to wear wigs but then they stopped to wear them as they feared the infection they may spread to them as it could have been the hair off the heads of people who had been killed by the Plague. Another type of fear was a fear of trade with nations who had the Plague (doc#14) as no port would admit England's ships and thus their foreign exportation stopped.…

The bubonic plague struck Europe with an iron fist, leaving destruction and mayhem wherever it went. The disease was easily spread, and became catastrophic during The Middle Ages. In the fourteenth century, Europe was struck by a massive wave of bubonic plague resulting in the death of nearly one third of the continent’s population (britanica encyclopedia). Many factors contributed to the Black Death pandemic; the bacterium travelled from Asia to Europe using rodents as the host, resulting in streets lined with plague. The poor living conditions and lack of proper waste disposal was a key contributor to the spreading of The Plague. Medical techniques of the time were very limited and were based off obsolete medical ideology and little successful research was conducted to support new medical treatments. The lack of proper sanitation during The…

Dark and cold, those were the two words that described the room. The only illumination was from the faint moon, a tempting ghost for a young and anxious soul. The room, though, held two souls, was accompanied by the lingering smell of pepperoni from a pizza. One of the souls was resting on the wood floor of the room and the panels creaked beneath his body as he shifted in his dreams. Although, creaking of the flooring was not the only thing to be heard in the room. What came from the window was the hustle and bustle of cars, and the soothing chirps of the crickets two stories down. The room was number thirty-five, a room number to a three story apartment building with a balcony. The balcony overlooked the Big Apple, New York City, the wind sealed out by glass sliding doors from the entrance of the balcony. White glossy walls invited a hand to investigate, but to the touch, the wall had a rough texture that could scrape and cut at your skin. The rest of room thirty-five was empty. There were only two beds, a Japanese style futon, and a couch pull out; along with a few dressers, an entertainment stand, coffee table, dining table, and night stands. Everything was wooden, with red, navy blue, gold, or black accents.…

As I walked through the door, I saw that the room looked so beautiful that I was left speechless. It was spatious, and it was so massive that it was two stories high! The first thing I did was run up the stairs. They were a vibrant green with hot pink polka dots. As I walked through the beaded door, I saw an astonishing marble replica of a swan overlooking my bed. The bed was made out of a purple comforter sewed together into a circle and it smelled like it was stuffed with rose petals! Gracefully hanging over my swan bed was a lovely black-laced drapery that brought depth to the room. As I dashed down the stairs to see the rest of the room, I noticed an attractive gray chandelier (with crystals dangling from it) hanging from the ceiling. The downstairs ceiling was a mystical diamond illusion that reflected the theme of the room. I was so distracted by the ceiling that I ran into a glass case! Inside was a life-size replica of Edward Cullen! As I examined it, I thought about how perfect it would be for my Twilight collection. To the left of my lovely sculpture was an air hockey table. “Sweet!” I said to myself. I turned around to see what else I had. I discovered a groovy, round, red/white hanging chair.…
