The Minority Report Comparison
Released in the year 1956, “The Minority Report” is a science-fiction short story written by Philip K Dick. Released in the year 2002, director Steven Spielberg adapted the short story into a film and released it as Minority Report. Despite having the same central focus (free-will and determinism), there are not only some similarities but also differences in the narrative and style of both.
In both the short story and film, the author and director respectively use narrative techniques that allow the reader to comprehend and visualize the story. For example, plot, style, time and theme are all narrative techniques. The commonalities of Dick’s story and Spielberg’s film are plot (despite Spielberg’s film being a little different, the general idea is the same),

From the narrative perspective, there lies many differences while there is minimal difference in style. The narrative differences focus on character classification and location. The style difference focuses on the format. Starting with narrative differences, the audience can see a difference in location and character classification. In “The Minority Report,” the location is set to New York City while in the film Minority Report, the locations vary because crime does not occur in one place rather all over the country thus the police officer (John Anderton) must travel to prevent crimes; also in Dick’s story, the protagonist is portrayed as old while in Spielberg’s film, he is a young man who is fit for his job. Although there are many other difference, listing all would be impossible; however, there is one other crucial difference that lies in the descriptive style. A descriptive style is one in which the author’s focus is on describing something in detail, whether that something is a character or event. Through the usage of sub-plots, Spielberg exposes Andertons’s character and past, enabling readers are to get an idea of the main

The first noticeable major difference is how the story is told. In the novel, Jon Krakauer writes from his own point of view, providing his own input and opinions on McCandless, while the film is told in his sister’s point of view; she is scarcely mentioned in the novel, aside from the fact that Chris was very fond of her. The shift in narrators in a way limits the amount of information that can be delivered to the audience. Though the narration by Chris’s sister adds a more…

The film the Minority Report with Tom Cruise falls into the American category of science fiction. Science fictional films often include scientific advances or major social changes. Being based in the year 2054, we see many imagined advances in the fields of science and technology. The whole idea of pre-crime is futuristic and incredibly advanced. Some of the properties that allow this movie to fall under the category of science fiction are the futuristic cars, the jetpacks, the ‘halos’, the screen on which Anderton watches the Precogs’ visions, and etc. The setting in which the movie takes places doesn’t show much change from now except for the advances in everyday places like where the car is parked outside of John’s home, the highway system, and the holographic screen in the G.A.P. Much of the costumes worn by the characters don’t seem to be too far from today’s wardrobe. The biggest change we see is the jumpsuits worn by the precogs in the Temple.…

The two computers “All the Troubles in the World” and “Minority Report” are both machines that can predict the future, but they operate in different ways. The computer in Minority Report is actually 3 human beings with psychic powers. However the computer in “All the Troubles in the World” is actually a super computer that becomes so complex it starts to act like a human. Some other differences are that Multivac controls the world’s economy and can predict everybody’s actions before the people can even think about doing it, while the Pre-Cogs can only predicts murders with vague visions. The ways the two machines operate are vastly different; the Pre-cogs need a technician to constant watch them and special medication, but all Multivac needs are replacement parts to be installed occasionally. People also see Multivac as a god as it can predict almost anything with the data its collected. The Pre-Cogs on the other hand are constantly doubted as some people don’t believe they are 100% accurate. Although the two machines have many differences they are similar in some aspects, they both can predict murders and a police force can stop it before it happens. Both of the universes heavily rely on the two machines to make the world a better place. Overall the two stories “All the Troubles of the World” and “Minority Report” have similar concepts but are very different when you look at how the machines function.…

One thing in particular that the book does much better is making use of complex metaphors and themes, such as: the river for life, and oneness with nature, that string themselves together as you turn each page of the book, while in the movie the metaphors and symbolism are represented in a much different way through picture. In the book, both themes regarding the river are very vivid and clear, as they use strong imagery of nature to draw pictures in the minds of the readers. In the movie both themes are represented and referred to much less because of the lack of narration.…

Is it inhumane to arrest and convict a person of terrible crimes, even if it is not yet committed, if it is certain that it will be? Utopia is an imaginary place in which everything is perfect; in comparison, dystopia is an imaginary state in which the condition of life is extremely bad as from deprivation, oppression, or terror. George Orwell’s 1984 (1949), is a novel based on life in a dystopian setting, with a totalitarian government centered on war and hatred. Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report (2002) is a film in a futuristic setting with a system which predicts future murders so that citizens live a homicide-free utopian life. Winston Smith is the main character in 1984. His rebelious views on his society and government cause his arrest for ‘thoughtcrime,’ for which he is brainwashed until he complies to his society’s views. In Minority Report, John Anderton (Tom Cruise) begins by completely trusting the system which allegedly predicts murders before they happen. In fact, Anderton is an officer of precrime himself, and is responsible for figuring out the specific details of the murders. However, when it is revealed in the film that Anderton will murder a man he has not even met, he tries to fight the system to prove his innocence. The idea that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely is the central message of both 1984 and Minority Report. This is because technology is used to enforce power, it is purported to be infallible, and the result of the misuse of power is corruption.…

Steven Spielberg’s movie Minority Report portrays a world where murder never happens, our future society will not be as lucky. The PBS article of film adaptation points out the difference between written text and film and the struggle of adapting a book into a film. Books have a widely known imagination because of the narrator and how he or she writes the story. We create the picture on what is going on however, in film, it takes away your visual and shows the picture. Films mostly rely on the Director and it comes from their point of view and their take of the story. Also a film is limited to a two-hour show, while a novel came use as much time to show more detail. Most films have a different story, sometimes a different conclusion to what is going on in the book. They make it Similar to the audience and more shorter to make it appealing than the long book. Night and Fog (by Alain Resnais) and Hiroshima-Nagasaki 1945 (by Erik Barnouw) are two very different documentaries with two very similar messages. Though the task of viewing these films was quite difficult, both films conveyed a very strong message, the aftermath of human destruction. Resnais and Barnouw showed us the horrible capabilities of human beings at their worst and the result when humanity and morality is no longer present. Both filmmakers took the task of bringing the realities of these two disasters to life in two very different ways. While Resnais and Barnouw differ a lot in their narrative and musical, chronology, and cinematography, structural and ethical choices, they do share slight similarities in each category. Separately, these two great directors produced two amazing documentaries. As different as the films are, the same message is effectively demonstrated in both pieces.…
