The Monkey’s Paw is by WW Jacobs, it takes place in England in the late 1800’s. This is a short story about a magical Monkey’s Paw that can grant three wishes. They wished for 200 pounds, It ended up taking the son’s life. They wished him back to life, then back to the grave again. Aunty Misery is by Judith Ortiz Cofer, it takes place in a rural village in the past. This folktale is about Aunty Misery and her pear tree. She is granted a wish and makes her tree capture people who try to steal pears off of it. Senor Death ends up getting trapped in the tree and causes the world to freak out. The Monkey’s Paw and Aunty Misery have more similarities than differences. There are many parallel episodes in both stories. In The Monkey’s Paw There are multiple parallel episodes. One example of a parallel episode is the three wishes. They pop up many times throughout the story. Another parallel episode is the three deaths of the previous owners of the paw. When each owner of the paw made a wish there was always a death. Another parallel episode is when Mr. White makes decisions he doesn’t think through them, ever. In Aunty

In Aunty Misery the pear tree is the magical object, in The Monkey’s Paw it is the paw that is magical. The wishes are another literary pattern. In The Monkey’s Paw, the paw grants three wishes. In Aunty Misery one of the visitors give her a wish for her hospitality. The last literary pattern is death. In The Monkey’s Paw Mr. White’s son dies in the factory machinery.
