Red Sweater ➢ Exposition: o Characters: ▪ Mr. Conway: Elderly man who only had one pair of shoes, selling some puppies ▪ Boy—narrator: around 14 years old, sent to help Mr. Conwayy by bringing his shoes to town to be fixed ▪ Hunter’s son: came around Mr. Conway’s house wearing a red sweater that the narrator wanted. Was admiring the puppies. ▪ Hunter: with his son at Mr. Conway’s house ▪ Mr. Gentile: the shoe repair man o Setting o Probably 1960s o Small town in Canada or United States ➢ Initial Conflict: • Narrator wants the red sweater that the hunter’s son has ➢ Rising Action: o Boy goes home to check if money is available to buy sweater, as he comes from a poor family o Sees that there after checking the jar and asking his mother o Goes to town to buy his sweater and have Mr. Conway’s shoes fixed—buys sweater first o Mr. Gentile tells the boy that the shoes can no longer be repaired o The boy goes outside in front of the store ➢ Climax o The boy has a decision to make—keep his precious sweater or have Mr. Conway’s shoes fixed? ➢ Falling Action o The boy decides to think of Mr. Conway first and returns his sweater and some extra money in exchange for a new pair of shoes for Mr. Conway ➢ Denouement o The boy gives the wrapped up shoes to Mr. Conway—Mr. Conway is grateful o Mr. Conway gives the boy the red sweater (which he had received from the hunter’s son in exchange for a puppy) o Theme: Sometimes what you sacrifice is worth more than what you gain
