The Murder Of Andrew Carnegie
Shortly after the civil war, industry was booming. Andrew Carnegie was the first to mass produce steel in Pittsburgh. After the disaster Carnegie steel was going down hill. Frick thought he was the one doing all the work and thought he could take over and be the main man. Frick was trying to take charge and a worker came in Mr. Frick’s office and got his attention and shot him in the side of the head. He missed where he was aiming and grazed the side of his head. After realizing what happened, Frick attacked the shooter and then the man stabbed Frick in the stomach. Three days after the attack Frick was out of the hospital and trying to plan his revenge. One of the major problems between Frick and Carnegie began with the 1892 labor strike at the Homestead Works, which was part of Carnegie's Steel Company. It started because Carnegie wanted to eliminate the unions in his mills, but Frick supported actions that setback the labor movement for decades.     He ignored union involvements. He threatened to bring in the Pinkertons, who were a detective agency for hire that amounted to a private army of thugs. He was also strictly against organized labor, and refused to allow union workers at his mines. Frick’s action led to the Homestead Strike of 1892. The strike took place at Carnegie’s steel plant in Homestead Pennsylvania on June 30. It was between the Carnegie Steel Company and many of its workers. Workers belonging to the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel struck Carnegie Steel Company at Homestead, Pennsylvania to protest a proposed wage cut. Frick was determined to break the union. He hired three hundred Pinkerton detectives to protect the plant and strikebreakers. After an armed battle between the workers and the detectives, ten workers were killed and sixty workers were wounded. The governor then called out the state militia. The plant opened, nonunion workers stayed on the job, and the strike was officially over on November 20 (Henry Clay Frick, 2013).
