“The Necklace” and “The Gift of the Magi” Compare/Contrast Have you ever read a short story and learned a life lesson from it? Well in one story “The Necklace” Madame Loisel looses a diamond necklace and replaces it with a real one, but the one she lost wasn’t real. The other story the “Gift of the Magi”, Della and her husband both don’t make a lot of money, but want to get each other something for Christmas. Both have to get rid of something to be able to afford it. As you can see Madame Loisel and Della are alike and different in many ways.

Madame Loisel and Della are similar in many ways. Madame Loisel and Della both are the same because they both want something really bad and do whatever they have to do to get it. Madame Loisel in “The Necklace” wants jewelry to wear and borrows jewelry from a friend, but then looses it and has to buy a new one. Della in the “Gift of the Magi” wants to get her husband a thing for his watch. It says in the story “She only haves $1.87 to buy a present for Jim”, but she manages to cut and sell her hair for money to get it. The two ladies both go out of their way to do what they have to do to get what they want.

Madame Loisel and Della are different in many ways also. In “The Necklace” Madame Loisel doesn’t work for anything, her husband gives her money. The husband in the story says, “ Here is my 400 francs for my new hunting gun I was saving to go on a hunting trip with my friends, but you can use it for your dress.” In the “Gift of the Magi” Della says in the story “She only has $1.87 to buy a present for Jim.” Della works or sells things for what she gets and Madame Loisel just sits there and looks pretty while her husband works and makes all the money.

The main character in The Necklace’s, and the main character in The Gift of the Magi’s, personalities differ from one another vastly. In The Necklace, the main character Mathilde Loisel is an ungrateful middle class woman who seeks riches and admiration. Alternatively, the main character in The Gift of the Magi, Della Young, is compassionate and works very hard to buy her husband a present, and ultimately, selling the one thing that was more precious to her than anything else, her hair. Mathilde is selfish, and when her friend, Madame Foreister is sympathetic enough to let her borrow her jewelry, Mathilde asks rudely, “Haven’t you anything else?” (Maupassant, ¶39). In contrast, Della is very appreciative when she receives a hairpin, and is very unselfish when giving away her hair to buy a present for her husband. Mathilde and Della are also both remotely poor. In the beginning of The Necklace, Mathilde and her husband were pretty well off, not too rich, and very simple. But at the end of the story, they are dirt poor, having spent 10 years paying debts. On the other hand, Della started out fairly poor, only being able to gather $1.87 for a Christmas present, but enjoyed life all the same.…

The plots of these two stories differ from each other, but are still both ironic. In “The Necklace” Mathildes husband got her an invitation to a high class party, and she got upset and made a big deal about it because she didn’t have a new dress. She also wanted a necklace to go with that dress. So her husband bought her a new dress, and she ended up borrowing a necklace from her friend who is high class. She ends up losing the necklace and having to pay 10 years of debt due to that, she saw her friend 10 years later and found out the necklace was a fake. In “The Gift of The Magi” They both love each other and wanted to get Christmas presents for each other. So Della cut her hair off so she could by Jim a chain for his antique pocket. Jim sold his pocket watch to buy Della a set of combs for her hair. So that’s why it makes the story’s ending Ironic.…
