Have you ever been dressed up for a night? In a story called, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant explains how a woman’s beautiful night turned into tragedy. In “The Necklace” a woman, Mathilde, uses her husband and her friend to get things for the ball. Then, later realizes that the necklace was missing. Mathilde spent ten years of her life paying for the replacement necklace. She later finds out that the necklace was an imitation. Guy de Maupassant shows the themes of looks do not matter and being happy with what you have in “The Necklace”.
From the start, the theme looks do not matter applies in the text, “ he stammered: "Why, the dress you go to the theatre in. It looks very nice, to me . . ." Mathilde’s husband points out

    The necklace by Guy Maupassant is a story about a woman who was pretty and charming but she married poor. She wasn’t satisfied with her life and always wanted to live like the rich. Her husband did all he could to keep her happy. One day he brought home an invitation to attend a ball hoping this will delight his wife since she like to be fancy and rich. However his wife almost turned down the invitation because she didn’t have anything to wear. He was able to get her new clothing for the ball and to finish her outfit she borrowed a diamond necklace from a friend to wear to the ball. They had a great time at the ball however she lost the diamond necklace. She and her husband had to work hard and spend all their life savings to replace the necklace. At the end of the story, the woman ran into her friend she borrowed the necklace from and learned that it was a fake necklace instead of real diamonds. This is a very entertaining story and the writer was able to make the readers understand the deep and hidden meaning of events and because of that I agree that Maupassant ultimate goal is achieved through symbolism.…

The theme “vanity as downfall works for this because she was worried about her appearance so much and had to borrow this necklace, loses it, spends 10 years to pay for it and then finds out it was a fake and must live this terrible life. He is certain that Mathilde will be excited. However, she becomes very upset, saying she has nothing suitable to wear to such an event. Hoping to make her happy, Monsieur Loisel offers to buy her a new 400 pound dress with the money he was saving for a new gun. As the ball approaches, Madame Loisel again becomes anxious because she has no jewelry to wear to accent her new dress. When her husband suggests she borrow jewels from Madame Forestier Mathilde pays her old friend a visit. Her friend tells her to borrow any piece of jewelry that she wishes. Mathilde chooses only a beautiful diamond necklace. Madame Loisel enjoys herself greatly at the ball and many men notice her.
