In Mary Howitt’s “The Spider and the Fly” a charming spider tries his best to get this smart fly to come in but she keeps saying no but then he starts to complement her talk nice about her and when she hears that she must come into his home for dinner if he keeps to complement her the way he did so and because of this she forgets about his evilness and when she is not looking the spider grabs her drags her upstairs and kills her. In Guy De Maupassant’s “The Necklace”it takes a lot to get a woman to be grateful even a invitation to the ambassadors ball won’t even do the job. In Guy De Maupassant’s story “The Necklace” a lady named Matilda is all about looks and money and when her husband gets her a invitation to the ambassadors ball she has to go buy a expensive dress and then she gets back a realizes she has no jewelry to wear so her husband suggests that she asks her friend and when she does her friend lets her pick out of her jewelry and she picks out a diamond necklace then she goes to the ball dances with every man there and doesn’t leave till four in the morning well on the carriage ride home she loses the necklace and instead of telling her friend they go out and buy a new one for 36,000 francs and ends up having to get a job and her husband must get a second job and it takes them 10 years to pay it off and she runs into her friend and has the audacity to tell her it’s all her fault but then find out that the necklace she let her use was a fake and was only worth 500 francs. The theme “vanity as downfall works for this because she was worried about her appearance so much and had to borrow this necklace, loses it, spends 10 years to pay for it and then finds out it was a fake and must live this terrible life.
