The Necklace By Guy De Maupassant

Guy De Maupassant's "The Necklace" is a story about a woman who suffers morally, emotionally, and physically because she believes she deserves than what she has. Mathilde was a young woman born in a low-class family. She dreamed and fantasized about having riches. Her lowly husband who was the only clerk finally was able to give her the chance to experience an elegant ball. She worried as she had nothing to wear. Her husband gave her the money he could to buy a dress. She was still unhappy as she had no jewelry, not a single ornament to wear. Her husband suggests she borrow some from her friend Madame Forestier, who was much richer than they were. She borrowed a beautiful diamond necklace. Upon the first sight of the necklace her heart throbbed, her hands trembled because it's beauty. She is finally happy and goes to the ball with her husband. Mathilde danced all night long and had a wonderful time. When she and her husband arrive home she notices the necklace is gone. They look everywhere and do everything they can to find it. The
"They dismissed their servant; they changed their lodgings; they rented a garret under the roof." and "She came to know what heavy housework meant and the odious cares of the kitchen." these two sections show the changes that they made. "she washed the dishes, using her dainty fingers and rosy nails on greasy pots and pans. She washed the soiled linen, the shirts, and the dishcloths, which she dried upon a line; she carried the slops down to the street eery morning and carried up the water, stopping for breath at every landing" I feel like this passage tells us about the personal changes she made. I would never have guessed from the beginning of the story that she would ever work like that. She now looked old. She had become strong, hard, and rough. She had changed so much her own dear friend Madame Forestier didn't even recognize
