The Negative Consequences Of Teenage Driving

There are many challenges that teens face. They face drugs and peer pressure, but the main cause of teen death in the United States is caused by reckless driving, drunk driving, and texting while driving. They sometimes make these poor choices because they don't know their certain limits. Often times, they make these decisions and it’s too late for them to see the consequences. Teens should be aware of the consequences of breaking these rules that could impact their life or someone else's. Making teens aware can make other people feel safe when they are on the road.
What is the biggest concern for teen driving? Drunk driving is the biggest concern for teens because they don't think about what can happen to them when driving a car under the influence. Studies have shown that there is a proven link between alcohol and crashes. According to Ryan Bilstein, “Decades of studies have proven a link between alcohol and the crashes that led to thousands of deaths every year, particularly among youths” ( Bilstein). These studies show that youths are usually the victims of drunk driving. Awareness programs should be free to any student who wants to know their limits, which will help cut down the number of deaths.
The second concern is reckless driving why?
Due to teens not knowing their limits, they drive recklessly too fast and often drive recklessly or either drag race when using a motor vehicle or don't pay attention and text while they are driving. Authorities say that this is a problem and they need to get the racers off the road. “Metro area authorities need to get the racers off the street and onto drag strips and race tracks where they can compete without endangering others” (Nakaya). This will then decrease drag racing throughout the roads and maybe help decrease reckless driving.
The third concern with teen driving is texting while driving.
Experts say it takes a short period of time to send a text, which is not worth more than a human life. A lot of research has been done on the idea of texting while driving and they concluded that “Traffic experts say it takes any about seven seconds to send a text when behind the wheel” (Nelson). It doesn't matter how tough the laws are, teens will still take the risk and text while behind the wheel. “Despite tougher laws against cell phone use while driving, it will take a change of attitude about risky driving to change teen habits” (Nelson). according to Minnesota public radio. If teens follow these laws, there won't be danger, and their lives won't be at
risk.
Should schools promote awareness to their students? The answer to that question is yes. Each year, 800 or more students are killed in motor vehicle crashes from going from point A to point B. “According to transportation research brand special report 269, the relative risk of school travel a national perspective and guidance for local community risk assessment each year 800 school aged children are killed in motor vehicle crashes” ( Moore). A student should know the risks of driving before they get behind the wheel. Therefore, whoever is behind the wheel should drive at their own risk and know their own limits so that everyone will feel safe.
