fall into and perpetuate. When people continuously see roles that they are supposed to play or fall into they eventually conform to those parts. Producers who are majority white use race tropes to create roles for other groups of people to follow. The French Jerk, the Latin Lover, and the scary minority suspect are typical tropes that have been featured in many popular shows. Though these tropes are featured and create some controversy the tropes based off of African Americans seems to be the most controversial and involve prejudice ideas.
African Americans have been depicted negatively and positively in numerous shows however the negative depictions seem to be more prominent than the positive depictions. These negative images are readily visible

The television show “Roots”, a miniseries airing in the late Seventies, provided gripping and emotional insight into the lives of a fictional family victimized by slavery. This controversial project attempted to depict some semblance of the horrific history of the American black community in a way that the primarily white population would willingly consume. Unfortunately, this depicted the African-American involuntary “immigration” experience as one that was terrible yet palatable, tying it up nicely with the bow of a “happy ending”. “Roots” opened a dialogue amongst the American people and carved out a place for African-Americans in mainstream television that wasn’t comedy, but also catered to the comfort of its white audience. This show worked…

After watching both the TED talk “The Danger of the Single Story” and the film “God Grew Tired of Us” I definitely noticed the large nature of prejudice and stereotyping of African Americans in our society. Society has made massive improvements since the times of slavery and the stereotypes that have reinforced it. However, there still seems that several individuals go uninformed about the lingering stereotypes, negative positions, and subjugation to Africans and African Americans. It’s also crucial to investigate how these stereotypes are established and dismissed in order to get rid of the problem once and for all. Several people acquire expectations founded on their opinions and are persuaded to disregard or reject information that is unreliable…

The portrayal of black women remains a representation of how people see them; treat them and how they observe themselves. From how they wear their hair, how they look, how they dress, their assets, skin color and ethnicity, they are being picked apart from things that serve no importance of how a black woman should be respected. In the article, “Mentoring and Mothering Black Femininity in the Academy: An Exploration of Body, Voice, and Image through Black Female Characters” by Devair and Rhonda Jeffries it examines the social construction of the identity of black women in the media. For example, most of what we see on the media is never accurate about black women; it is used to tear a community down because of the past racial attitudes. The article says, “A pressing issue is the lack of Black women’s voice and presence in both media productions’ illustra¬tion of them and the scholarship about them. Therefore, much of what is consumed by mainstream culture is a skewed, caricatured perception of Black women created by those outside o f their demographic”. (127). I believe the past has significance in the present about how black women are perceived in the media since it continues to put exclusion on black women and we continue to not stand up for how we should be characterized therefore, our identity becomes invisible to the…

Today we see African Americans depicted in music videos, film, tv shows, news, and many other platforms of entertainment and media, but how many of those representations are correct? Realistically, it is impossible to represent whole racial groups and ethnicities, which is why generalizations and stereotypes are created. But the misrepresentation of African Americans in media and entertainment only further stimulates stigma, racism, mistreatment, and discrimination in and towards the black community.…

Even though as a population, we have progressed and have broken down many social barriers, I feel like the entertainment industry still shows African Americans in the same fashion: gangsters, robbers, simpleminded folks, or people strictly with a “ghetto” or “black” mentality. They do not see African Americans as complicated characters with many layers of emotions. We are also seen in one light, and this is why many people still do not understand the African American population. The public portrays them as the same. This attitude hinders individuality and creativity. I would offer closure to this issue, by asking Hollywood to stop typecasting blacks into…

Have you ever wonder why African-American males are usually drug dealers, pimps, convicts, or even a father with multiple children and is a deadbeat father? Or why does an African-American female have to be man-less, on well-fare with multiple children with different baby daddies, or even sometimes on the screen shaking her ass? Well to me this is exactly how most movies, television shows, music, and magazines portray African-Americans. The media portrays African-Americans in a stereotypical manner. Even though there may be some truth in these portrayals, they are sometimes unrealistic and unfair.…

There is a long history of showing negative stereotypes in both film and television. The particular negative images used in television and films...come from a long legacy of social inequality and oppression, and their retelling strengthens these beliefs in white supremacy. By showing the negative stereotypes of minorities, the majority is able to justify the subordination of racial minority groups. When stereotypes are shown to us so regularly, negative images of racial minorities become a part of the collective consciousness.…

African Americans have been victims of racism on television shows from ever since they started to show on television shows to today. When we see African Americans on television, they are portrayed as stupid comedians, murderers, poor, and uneducated. According to J. Fred MacDonald, the author of Black and White TV: African Americans in Television since 1948, “Television has been inhospitable to blacks who were not middle class and/or pejoratively stereotyped. Less visible, for instance, have been representations of the authentic African-American lower class and urban underclass” (143). This book was written more than twenty years ago and it is saying that African Americans were portrayed as symbolism of poor group on television from 1940s to…

Widespread perception of their criminality or stereotypical behavior is something of a phenomenon relative to structured absence on power as well as a positive assessment towards White individuals. This is in view of the fact that, “Hollywood films and the television industry have both contributed to the invisibility of racial/ethnic minorities and helped perpetuate racial/ethnic stereotypes….Stereotypes are found throughout film and television because they are mental shortcuts…[so] audiences can quickly understand the characters introduced” (Fitzgerald, 2014, p. 351).
