Slowly, over the years, studying the humanities has become more and more neglected. Slowly, science, technology, medicine, and engineering has dominated jobs and the school curriculum all over the world. The humanities has become like a dead language, unknown and forgotten. We fail to realize that without studying English, history, art, and culture, society cannot function. Some people argue that studying the humanities does not help society. The jobs related to the humanities don’t pay as much, and the majors are too expensive. Being an English major means that you are “going to be a teacher” and that is the only successful career possible. (HuffingtonPost). This is essential, since English is not “the universal language of science and medicine”. (ScienceMag.org). As said before, people need to understand the results to make progress in STEM. Since everyone does not understand English, it would be difficult for scientists to get their point across. Now, being fluent in different languages is seen as a “requirement for a successful career in commerce and industry.” (ScienceMag.org). Without the humanities, getting a job would be difficult. To be successful in the workplace, people need to study the humanities since it teaches human behavior. This would enhance people’s “ability to work well with others”. (ScienceMag.org). Cooperation is an extremely important life skill, and without that, society would crumble. Do we want to collapse into civil war and mass destruction? Also, the knowledge of foreign backgrounds and cultures will allow for better interactions in the outside world. None of this can be accomplished if students aren’t taught about history and culture.
Emphasizing the humanities in school will lead to educated citizens in the world, which would lead to better-decision making in the government. Studying the humanities “can contribute to an informed sense of community” and let everyone become “participants in a common culture, shareholders in our civilization”. (higher-ed.org). With more importance given to humanities in school, we have more educated citizens. With more educated and verbally fluent civilians, major problems in the world such as: climate change, war, poverty, and terrorism can be addressed
