The National Rifle Association, or more commonly known as the NRA, is the single most powerful non-profit organization in the United States. Established on November 17, 1871, in New York, the group has grown to approximately 3 million members, all of which are patriotic supporters of the Second Amendment. The NRA serves one sole purpose in the U.S., and that is to promote: marksmanship, firearm safety, protection of hunting, self-defence, and gun ownership rights. The group bases its political position on the fact that firearm ownership is a civil liberty protected by the Second Amendment which comes from the Bill of Rights.
American gun culture is based on the right to own a gun and to protect oneself. Gun culture originated in the early history of the United States, as the early settlers owned guns to protect their land and families primarily in the west. In America the gun acts as a symbol of power and authority. There are nearly 59.1 million gun owners in the U.S., totalling to an estimated 200 million guns circulating among the adults population in the U.S. (wikipedia, 2007) The NRA is the heart and soul of the gun culture and has managed to continue a tradition of embracing and adoring gun ownership as a main part of every Americans culture.
The Second Amendment, the single most influential ingredient to gun ownership in the U.S. The Second Amendment states, as written in the Bill of Rights;
“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
The Second Amendment assures the citizens of the U.S. the right to own and use guns. The NRA uses the Second Amendment as a type of buffer to prevent pro-gun control lobbyists from taking away American gun rights.
