The odyssey portrays a society in which slaves are valued and loyal 45 marks
'The odyssey portrays a society in which slaves are valued and loyal'

The Odyssey is set in an ancient Greek society where slaves could either be valued as possessions or valued in terms of being treated as part of the family. Since slaves in Ancient Greece were usually spoils of war or could be bought in the market place, they were seen as property and this fact perhaps undermines how valuable they could have been to their master. The loyalty of a slave can be assessed by how trustworthy they are to their master and to oikos. In an Ancient Greek society where masters were usually away at war, a slave's loyalty could be judged by their ability to side with their master although they were away. Both value and loyalty must be discussed separately as within The Odyssey, a number of slaves are portrayed by Homer as valued but disloyal or loyal but not valued.

An example of a slave in the Odyssey who is treated with value and is also portrayed as loyal is Eumaeus, the swineherd. Odysseus' disguise among other reasons in book 14 is in order for him to distinguish those that remain loyal to him despite his absence. In Book 14 when we first meet Eumaeus, he displays his loyalty to Odysseus by complimenting his master, commenting that he will never find a master as good as Odysseus and by demonstrating his dedication to his job despite his master's absence (he is even willing to sleep outside with his boars). This proves his loyalty particularly because he does this in the company of a disguised Odysseus. The ancient Greeks, aware of how long a master could be away from home due to war, would be able to understand Eumaeus' continuation of his work without the presence of Odysseus highlighting his value as an asset needed for the good of oikos. The audience realises Eumaeus' value to the family in Book 16 when he greets Telemachus on his return like a fond father would, showering him with kisses. The homeric simile used by Homer to describe this recognition scene

Loyalty is extremely important within Odysseus’ world. Characters in The Odyssey will go as far as to die for their leader and or fellow men. If you are not loyal to your leader or a person of power, they could go as far as to kill you for disloyalty. For example, in all of book one of The Odyssey, Odysseus’ men die for Odysseus on countless occasions. If you were to have a foreign exchange student would you openly take them in to stay with you and feed them? Well that was what the Greeks thought was honorable in their culture. Whether it was a king or a beggar they would be accepted in and treated as a guest in the same ways. Most Greeks were very honorable and would accept whomever would arrive to their living state. In addition the odyssey, Odysseus has people who openly take him in and people who are keen on throwing him out or in some cases even trying to kill him. In this paper I will go over some cases where Odysseus is accepted as a guest and treated with respect and where Odysseus is neglected to be a guest and tried to be harmed.…

In the epic poem the Odyssey, Homer's main character Odysseus portrays three different roles. Unfortunately, not all of Odysseus’s characteristics are outstanding for a biblical worldview. The reason for this is because the manner in which he handles himself as a military leader, a husband and occasionally a father, is not the manner in which a Christian should handle himself. On the other hand, Odysseus’s relationships that he has with his army, wife and family are one that are mostly carried out in the manner of a Christian. It is strange that Odysseus cares deeply for his men and as well as his son, but does not seem to be as deeply connected to his wife…

A personal virtue that is a major theme in the epic, The Odyssey, is loyalty and perseverance. The best example of loyalty in of the epic, Penelope, who waited faithfully in Ithaca for 20 years for her husband, Odysseus’, to return. Odysseus’ son Telemachus, who also showed loyalty by standing by his father against the suitors who are after the throne. The two analytical lenses that I will use to interpret this epic, is the Psychological and the social class lens. The psychology lens focuses on the internal struggles of a character in a text. This could be seen by the three main characters, Odysseus, Telemachus, and Penelope. All three character, psychologically, have their mind set on their longing reunion throughout the epic which ties to…

Dogs have been considered symbols of loyalty for generations, even earning the epithet “Man’s Best Friend.” The great amount of love and faithfulness that dogs display toward their families is so iconic that outlines of dogs have become common symbols of loyalty. In Romeo and Juliet, loyalty runs in families from the head of the household through to the lowest of servants. All Montagues, including their servants and friends, feel a unanimous hatred toward the Capulets, and vice versa. Not only do fights take place between direct members of the two families, but also between the servants and friends of the opposing sides. For example, Gregory and Sampson, both Capulet servants, fight with Abram and Balthasar, Montague servants, in Act 1 Scene 1. Later in the same fight, Lord Montague and Lord Capulet both attempt to join in the violence. In Act 3 Scene 1, Mercutio, a friend of Romeo’s, fights with Tybalt, a member of the…

Displaying the characteristic of loyalty is an important quality of being a leader. Odysseus in The Odyssey is loyal to not only his companions, but his wife and homeland as well. In the introduction of the story, told by Muse, she recalls that Odysseus had “... weathered many bitter nights and days in his deep heart at sea.. To bring his shipmates home.” (7-9) Odysseus went through many hardships to allow his shipmates to return to their homes. When Odysseus arrived at the banquet held in his honor by the daughter of Alcinous, he “… weeps as the minstrel’s song reminds him of all of his companions… “ (758) in remembrance of his shipmates that were killed by their own recklessness. He wished that they were able to return to their homes but…

In Homer’s mythological epic: The Odessey the reader follows what is thought to be a story of a courageous soldier and his battle hardened crew fresh from their victory at the stronghold of Troy. Yet a dark shadow of greed and lust for power hangs over these heroic men. Odysseus is a supposed hero, an icon to all his men who are just as power hungry as he is thought to be heroic. Nevertheless at the time of Greek mythology all men had a level of lust, greed, and power hunger at their side. This ultimately leads to their downfall in suffering or death.…

In Homer’s Grecian epic The Odyssey, Odysseus is the heroic main character. Throughout his countless escapades, Odysseus can best be described as reckless, clever, and loyal. In The Odyssey, Odysseus’s journey is a long and tedious one, which partially can be attributed to his careless decisions along the way. Nevertheless, whether he is outwitting Polyphemus or defending his crew, Odysseus’s shrewdness and loyalty always seem to be his saving grace.…

When Odysseus arrived back in Ithaca, he went to Eumaeus’s hut. “Odysseus turned his back on the harbor and followed a rough track leading through the woods and up to the hills towards the place where Athena had told him he would meet the worthy swineherd, who of all the servants Odysseus had acquired had shown himself to be the most faithful steward of his property” (The Odyssey). After reaching the hut, guard dogs came after Odysseus, but Eumaeus’s stopped them, and let Odysseus in his hut. “The good swineherd let the way to his hut, ushered Odysseus in and invited him to sit down on some brushwood that he piled up for him and covered with the shaggy skin of a wild goat, large and thick, which served as his own mattress” (The Odyssey). One can see that Eumaeus is a true servant to his guest. After letting Odysseus in, the swineherd went out and prepared an abundant meal for Odysseus. “He selected two, carried them in, and slaughtered them both…When he had roasted it all, he served it up piping hot on the spits, set it in front of Odysseus, and sprinkled it with white barely-meal…he took a seat facing his guest, and encouraged him to eat” (The Odyssey). Through Eumaeus, Homer gave a great example about how one should treat their neighbor with kindness. Once Odysseus had finished telling Eumaeus his story, Eumaeus made a bed for Odysseus so he could sleep in the hut with him. “The swineherd jumped up, placed a bed for him by the fire…
