Humor is portrayed in many ways such as understatements, hyperboles, and satire. An understatement is when something is made to seem less important than it actually is. A hyperbole is an over reaction that makes something seem much more interesting than it actually is. In this essay the way humor is portrayed in the speech “ A Toast to the Oldest Inhabitant: The Weather Of New England” By Mark Twain and the essay “ The Dog That Bit People” By James Thurber.

In the Speech “A Toast to the Oldest Inhabitant: The Weather of New England” the author criticizes the poets who only come to New England during Spring. In the speech it says “Every year they kill a lot of poets for writing about “Beautiful spring””. The author says this to show that the poets don’t appreciate spring like the people that actually live there do. In the essay “The Dog Who Bit People” the author criticizes people who treat dogs like humans. In the essay it says how the family would do anything in order to keep the dog from being unhappy.
The Speech “A Toast to the Oldest Inhabitant: The Weather of New England” and the essay “The Dog That Bit People” are similar and different in many ways.
The speech and essay are different because of the ways the author uses hyperboles. Twain used more complicated hyperboles that Thurber did. Another reason they are different is because of the way the authors wrote them. Twain’s speech was more difficult for some readers to read because it used more complicated figurative language . One way they are similar is because both authors used satire. Twain critized people who only come to New England during the spring and Thurber critized people who treat their dogs like humans.
