The Outcasts of Poker Flat and the Metaphor of Texas Hold ‘em The story of “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” by Bret Harte is a beautifully written narrative about a character named Mr. John Oakhurst. During the story, Oakhurst is placed through a variety of situations that eventually lead to his subtle death. The story of “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” follows as a parallel to the game of Texas Hold ‘em in a very unique way. In the game of Texas Hold ‘em, every player is given two cards. This states the metaphor for where Mr. Oakhurst is currently at and what variables he has been given. In the beginning of the story Mr. Oakhurst is known to be a professional gambler and he has been kicked out of the town of Poker flat along with a few more Outcasts named the Duchess, Mother Shipton, and a man named Uncle Billy. Considering the fact they have been kicked out of the community, they now have to venture to the closest town, over a range of mountains, named Sandy Bar (1,2). They have a limited supply of goods to make it there, and these are the cards they have been given. The next turn of events in the game of Texas Hold ‘em is called the “flop.” In this turn, three cards are flipped over for everyone’s use in hope that the gamblers will have a better chance at winning the hand. These three cards are variables. The flop can sometimes benefit the gambler, and the other time the cards don’t help at all. In the story, the variables given to Mr. Oakhurst are three hindrances. One variable in the story is during the middle of the first night there are some added guests to the campsite for the night. These guests are named Tom Simson and Piney Woods (3). This makes the living situation for the night a little more difficult. The second variable happens in that same night. Uncle Billy goes on his own way without the rest of the outcasts. To make the situation even worse, Uncle Billy took the mules from

The Outcasts of Poker Flat is a short story filled with connotations of redemption and imbued with an incredible kind of misconception that only the most arrogantly self-righteous could conceive. Its primary purpose is to act as a cautionary tale about a seemingly respectable judgment that unjustly condemns four people to their untimely ends. Harte’s story is set in an 1800’s settlement brimming with discord and mistrust. After a series of very unfortunate events the townspeople decide to exile the “undesirables” of the town. And so, Harte’s ragtag group of outcasts are thrown together in a dire bid for survival. In the beginning the reader is only made aware of the labels Poker Flat had given the refugees and thus inevitably forms a negative…

In Bret Harte’s, “Outcast of Poker Flats” there are four major themes the author explores. Fate is a condition which the characters have little control. The outcasts are subject to various forms of unlucky fate that no one could have expected. For example, the unexpected blizzard that hits them just after they begin their voyage, which leads to their deaths. Heroism is another theme, seen best in the character of John Oakhurst.…

The Novel “A Prayer For Owen Meany” By John Irving is an inspiring story that follows two boys who live in the same town, one being a small and often diminished boy, Owen Meany and the other Johnny Wheelwright who loses his mother early in his life. It is narrated by Johnny himself, in which he describes how Owen altered his fate in god. The whole affair begins during a little league baseball game, when Owen hits a foul ball that unfortunately strikes Johnny’s Mom in the head, in turn killing her. After this event Johnny lives in different homes, however he and Owen remain good friends and together overcome many obstacles throughout their lives. Johnny tells his story to show the reader how powerful it can be…

The Spoon River Anthology is a story of many different cultured people all dying in a small town known as Spoon River. This play was based upon free-verse, and gravestone epitaphs, where the dead actually told their own story. The mood of the play was very dark. The lighting for this play set the mood, timid yet bold in some moments. The Scenery was based around a large grave stone. I wish there would have been more props; it would have made the play a lot more interesting. There were thirteen people in this play. However, it became really confusing when they played more than one character, and they never changed their attire. I was very confused at this point. If I would have read some background information before…

George and Lennie dislike their new job, but George reminds him that they “gotta keep it till we get a stake” (33). George could spend the money he earns for instant gratification (women and alcohol), but he reminds himself that “Me an’ Lennie’s rollin’ up a stake,” (53). George plans for the long term, so that he and Lennie can save their money to fulfill their dream of buying a house together. Later, Candy, a fellow bunkmate, hears of this dream, and proposes that he join them. This throws George a curveball, and responds, “I gotta think about that. We was always gonna do it by ourselves” (59). Candy has the money to make the dream come true, making it seem possible for a while. However, George’s plans are even further thrown off course when Lennie gets in trouble after accidentally killing Curley’s wife. Candy asks George “You an’ me can get that little place, can’t we George?” (94) but George accepts that it is end of a dream that was impossible from the start. George says, "… I think I knowed from the very first. I think I know'd we'd never do her. He [Lennie] usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would." (94). George never thought he would draw the “shoot Lennie” card, instead thinking he would be lucky enough to have the “fulfill dream” card. Therefore, George’s solitaire game represents uncertainty.…

Slavery is indisputably one of the most impactful events in history that still resonates its effects today. This is shown evident in Ralph Ellison’s King of the Bingo Game, where the protagonist still feels the impacts of slavery even though he was not a slave. Throughout the text, the unnamed protagonist demonstrates the struggles of many blacks affected by slavery. He tries to change his fate with the bingo game, but realizes that he cannot change the course of his life that slavery had already set in stone for him.…

The chips in Texas Hold Em’ poker are incentives for the players. They’re rewards that represent luck and skill all at once and that’s the beautiful thing about poker. Black chips are the most expensive chips and the chips that you want to have since they are $100. There are four other chip colors in poker other than black. Those colors starting from highest price to lowest price are green, blue, red, and white. What’s so intriguing about each color is that the way they are arranged in price order and what the meaning of that color is. For example, black is the most expensive chip and in general, the color black means power and is usually associated with power. The cheapest chip is the white chip and the color white represents mellow and light. Is it possible that the creators of poker made each chip with an idea in mind about how to place values on each of them? Most people just play the game of poker not realizing how well thought out it is, but it’s the most interesting card game in the world.…

The Dice Man written by Luke Rhinehart is an incredibly thought challenging and intentionally provocative piece that knows no bounds and sought to cover every aspect of the human psyche. The exploratory nature of this book transverse across subjects that most novels and authors would dare not touch. Rape, murder, sexual experimentation, racism, drug use, adultery and senseless blasphemy. The Dice Man covers them all, and when presented with the title quote “This book will change your life” I would plainly agree and contend that it will not only change your life in some way but severely change your perspective on things.…

He is wearing a black suit and appears to be deeply engrossed in the card game taking place at the table in front of him. This man would accurately represent Rosedale’s character for a variety of reasons. One of the key aspects is the position of this particular man. The man is standing right against the table of gamblers. From the lines – “He knew, of course, that there would be a large house-party at Bellomont, and the possibility of being taken for one of Mrs.Trenor’s guests was doubtless included in his calculations. Mr.Rosedale was still at a stage in his social ascent when it was of importance to produce such impressions”; the reader understands Rosedale’s character of being a social climber and wanting to be more recognizable as a member of the elite society. Gambling, as the term suggests, literally means taking risks and in this context, it could metaphorically represent the risk Rosedale is taking by attempting to join the upper class. The reader soon realizes that this class of society is usually deceptive, duplicitous and vicious; hence, by being a part of it Rosedale may be taking a rather large risk, much like the game being played in the painting and the wagering of large sums of money. Rosedale would choose to enact this particular man as he could metaphorically represent Rosedale’s position in society. The gambling table could represent the elite upper class and…

    How to Play Poker

There are many varieties of this highly popular card game, but I will teach you how to play the very common "five card stud". The game begins, as most do, with an "ante" of the lowest possible chip in your possession. This may be changed later on but is normally played this way. Then, the dealer "deals" the cards in a clockwise manner, one to every player, and around again as needed. Common courtesy in poker says that you don't touch your cards until they have all been placed in front of you. Then you look at your card or cards and move to betting. The person with the highest ranked card showing ( 2's or deuces being the lowest and ace being the highest unless otherwise called) "opens" the betting. This means that they will look at their hand and bet accordingly. A common bet for the first round is either the lowest chip or to "check". To check means that you would like to pass without placing a bet. Other players may bet and by doing so the bet would pass around the table to all players. If the check passes around the table, then another card is dealt free of charge. There are three common reasons to check. First, it is if you don't have anything good in your hand. Second, it is to see the bets of the other players and compare hands (a high bet meaning a seemingly good hand, low bet meaning the opposite). And third, to "bluff" your opponents for any reason. When betting, you can also "fold". This means that you drop out of the game and cannot come back in. If choosing to fold, you lose your bet, but will not have to bet…
