the outsiders
‘The Outsiders’ by S.E Hinton shows the challenges of teenagers in America during the 1960’s. Many of the characters in the novel are ‘heroes’ as they face their fears and become better people. Johnny was a character to remember. He overcame his own fears to save the lives of pony-boy and a group of young children. Darry was courageous due to the sacrifices and choices he made to his family. Cherry Valance will be highly remembered for all she stood up for and all she believed in. Although all these characters were heroes, there are some characters in the novel that can’t be admired. The soc’s were violent people who only thought about themselves. Their reckless behaviour led to suffering and fear.
Many of the characters in the novel were heroes but there was one character who was a huge hero. Johnny was a hero in many different ways. Johnny was a nice, loving and caring kid who would do anything for anyone. In the novel it shows because when the soc’s came over and started drowning pony-boy in the fountain, Johnny took a stand to save his friend and so Johnny killed the soc because he didn’t want his friend to die. “I killed him…I killed that boy.” Page 69. Johnny didn’t only save his friends life but also saved the lives of a group of young children. Johnny was very courageous due to saving the lives of young children. He seen the fire at the church and him and pony-boy both rushed to the church. Johnny went straight into the church and he got all those young children out with the help of Pony-boy and Dally.”…You three are the bravest kids I’ve ever seen…” Page 116. Johnny gave his own life away to save those young children because in the end Johnny died but he died a hero.
Darry was a hero due to all the love and sacrifices he made for pony-boy. Darry had been raising pony-boy since pony-boy was 13 when their parents had died. Soda-pop had made the decision to drop out of school to help Darry with money, cooking, cleaning, looking after and spending time

In my opinion, he is not a hero, but an anti-hero. Dally was a criminal, and he took pleasure in that; he didn’t like doing things the legal way. He was a product of bad circumstances. The reason why he is a hero, is that he saved Johnny and Pony many times. Dally helped them find a place to stay when they were fugitives; gave them money and a gun; and when he risked his life to save the kids from the burning barn.…

Johnny is a hero in The Outsiders because he has helped people. The first way he has helped people is when he killed Bob to save Ponyboy from drowning. This helps people because that way Ponyboy survives and does not die. The second way he has helped people is when he decided to turn himself in. Do you know what a hero is? A hero to me is someone who has courage to stand up against things and that risks his own life for something small. He is because he saved Ponyboy, he saved all the kids from the church that caught on fire, and he gave Dally something to live for.…

‘The Outsiders’ written by S.E Hinton demonstrates that violence can cause much change to a person on the inside as well as outside. This book became an immediate success when it was written during the 1960’s and was based around the reputation and the stereotypes of that current decade. If you were a kid growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma you either belonged to one of two groups, a “Soc” or a “Greaser”. In this book, there are many differences between the two groups, which tends to cause much violence. S.E Hinton has much authority to write about this violence because she has seen it happen firsthand. In The Outsiders violence occurs at its very best. It affects people in different ways, changes people – physically and emotionally but also causes very positive outcomes which turns into a lifelong lesson for both the Socs and the Greasers.…

People often think that a hero is someone perfect—someone who always looks good, does the right thing, and says the right thing at the right time, but that is not always the case. Heroism means putting others before oneself and helping them, even if it is risky to do so. You do not have to be handsome, wear a cape, or fly to do that; sometimes ordinary people can unexpectedly turn out to be heroes. In the book The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, one unexpected hero is the character Ponyboy Curtis, a poor member of a gang called The Greasers. A second unexpected hero is Johnny Cade, a quiet, abused teen who is also a Greaser. Being an underdog does not automatically make one a hero, though. The character of Dally Winston, for example, is not quite a hero. An imperfect, ordinary person with problems can be a hero if he/she is willing to sacrifice his/her own health and…
