The Outsiders Book Review
“The Outsiders” is a novel written by S. E. Hinton in 1967. The story is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1965. The book follows two rival groups, the Greasers and the Socs (short for socials). The groups are divided by the economic status of their societies. The main Characters are Ponyboy Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, Darry Curtis, Dally Winston, Two-Bit Mathews, Steve Randle, and Johnny Cade. Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry are three brothers that look out for each other after their parents died in a car crash. Dally is one of the roughest of the Greasers. His violent tendencies make him more dangerous than the other greasers, and he takes pride in his criminal record. Two-Bit is a wisecracking greaser who regularly shoplifts. Steve Randle is Sodapop’s best friend since grade school. Johnny Cade is Ponyboy's best friend, 16 years old, and lives with his alcoholic and abusive mother and father. One night, Dally, Johnny and Pony meet two beautiful Soc girls, Cherry and Marcia. Cherry is smart and dreamy like Ponyboy, and they have a good conversation. On the way home, the girls' boyfriends catch them all together. It turns out that Cherry's boyfriend is Bob, the same boy who beat Johnny up. Later that night, Ponyboy comes home late and gets into such a fight with Darry, then runs to the park with Johnny just to get away from the house. Bob and his friends find Pony and Johnny there, and nearly drown Pony in a fountain. Terrified and angry, Johnny stabs Bob to death.

The two boys run to find Dally, knowing he will know what to do. He gives them money and tells them to hide in a church a short distance out of town. They stay there for a few days, reading to each other and talking about poetry and sunsets. When Dally comes to find them, they tell him they want to turn themselves in. Before they can, however, the church catches fire and several small children are trapped inside.
Without thinking, the boys rescue them, and a large piece of burning wood falls on Johnny and

This story is about a group of kids that are called Greasers, because they live on the East side of town, which is the lower income part of the city. They all slick back their hair with grease, and that's where the name Greasers came from. Ponyboy Curtis is the main character in this story, and he has 2 brothers, one named Darry, and the other named Sodapop. One night Johnny and Ponyboy are out at the park, and a group of Socs, the nickname for Rich Kids, came by and started beating them up. One of them stuffed Ponyboy's face into the fountain and tried to drown him, so Johnny stabbed him before he killed Ponyboy. The boy that he stabbed died, and so they went to a friend who gave them money and a gun to run away with. They ran away to an abandoned church, and one day Dallas, the friend who gave them the supplies came by and took them out to lunch, and when they returned the church was one fire. Johnny and Pony saved the kids inside, and a piece of wood fell on Johnny and he broke his back. He died in the hospital a few days later, and Dallas couldn't take it so he robbed a grocery store and took out an unloaded gun when the police came, so they shot and killed him. Exposition: The gang is introduced and the…

Hilton’s employment of characterization captures the drive behind man to belong, and what it can compel someone to do. Dally and Johnny are key examples of this, as their dependency on the gang is due to them not having a supportive family or another place to turn to. This is contrasted with the character of Darry, a more peripheral member of the gang who, due to his stable job and his history of athletic achievements, doesn't depend on the gang for self fulfillment and a life purpose. The Outsiders leads the audience to question the significance of belonging through the allegiance of the gang contrasted with biological bonds of family. Throughout the entire novel, Ponyboy struggles to find his place within the gang and within his family unit, as he fights with his brothers and feels alienated and unwanted. As Ponyboy tries to find his place within life, he turns away from his brothers and towards the support of the ‘greaser family’. Ponyboy’s journey is compared with Johnny, who is pushed away by his parents and looks to the greaser gang for family support and comfort. As Ponyboy gains an insight into Johnny’s life he in turn learns to appreciate his brothers and the sense of belonging they offer. “It ain’t the same thing as having your own folks care about you” Johnny said…
