Success is a golden pathway that, with luck and hard work, few people will get chance to walk on. In the novel, The Recruit, Robert Macamore describes that in order to be successful; a person must be a problem solver and work collaboratively with others to achieve goals. The main character of the book, James, tries very hard to succeed, and he never gives up. He attempts to reach his dreams and goals to obtain the highest level in the Cherub (spy organization). The main character accomplishes his goals with the support and help that the adults, trainees, and peers/friends at the Cherub give him. CHERUB is an institution where many adults work on helping young people out of trouble become intelligent and confident. Although, these children have lost their parents, they are still able to reach their destination of dreams by the support of adults within CHERUB. The adults in Cherub motivate James to change his life style and to think about different ways of being an independent person. The chairman of the CHERUB says, “you’re intelligent, physically fit and you have an appetite for trouble” (Machmore 67). This is how they try to encourage James that he is smart and intelligent. The coaches set up a schedule for James to start activities and join training courses. They provide him shelter, tools, food, and all necessities of daily living; also the CHERUB organization provides education by enrolling him into classes. “For two hours each day James and Connor sat next to each other while the Russian teacher barked orders and insults (149). The most challenging thing for James was learning a new language, but with the help and support of adults James was able to learn Russian. James is confident, and appreciates because of help provided by adults in Cherub. James’s trainee colleague supports him to achieve his aim too. James appears to be drowning because he is tends to overestimate his current ability. As well as
