The Patriot Movie Chapter Summaries

The Patriot is about a man named Benjamin Martin. Benjamin Martin, father of seven, had fought in the French – Indian War and become a legend. This movie takes place during the American Revolutionary War and in South Carolina in the year 1776. Benjamin's son Gabriel wishes to join the Continental Army against his father's wishes. Gabriel is then captured by the Red Coats outside of his own house when he had come home to be aided for his injuries that occurred nearby during the war. When Gabriel's younger brother, Thomas witnessed his brother being captured he attacked a Red Coat soldier named Colonel William Tavington. Colonel Tavington then shoots Thomas, leaving with Gabriel. Thomas then dies in his father's arms. Benjamin then takes
his two sons that were left in his household, telling his oldest daughter to hide with her sisters in the fields, goes to get a vengeance on the Red Coats. Benjamin and his sons get Gabriel back, while killing a group of Red Coats. Throughout the movie, Gabriel gets married to a girl he had known since he was little and Benjamin forms a militia to fight the Red Coats. Gabriel is then killed by Colonel Tavington which only causes his father to fight even harder. The protagonist in the movie is Benjamin Martin. Benjamin Martin's son was murdered in front of him and his other son was captured causing him to go to war with the British Red Coats. The antagonist in the movie is Colonel William Tavington. Colonel Tavington killed two of the Martin Boys and was a leader of the Red Coats. Colonel Tavington also did not follow the rules of war making him unhonorable. The main conflict in the movie is vengeance. Benjamin Martin did not want to be involved in the war. He then had no choice other than to fight for the two sons that he lost due to the war. The conflict is resolved when Benjamin Martin kills Colonel Tavington. One scene from the movie that stood out in my mind was when Benjamin and his two sons killed a group of Red Coats and got Gabriel back. The three worked together in a way that amazed me. A second scene that stood out in my mind was when the Continental Army had men captured. Those of the men who were not captured devised a plan to trick the Red Coats into believing they had some of their men as well. They used scarecrows with red jackets, The Red Coats then released the Continental army not realizing they had been tricked until the Continentals were long gone. Both of these scenes relate to the theme because they show that the men fighting on the Continental Army would do anything to save the men in their army. A lesson from this movie that I can apply my life is that you would do anything for your family. Benjamin did not want anything to do with war but once his son was killed he went to war and fought hard and won the war for all the lives lost including his two sons. After watching this movie I have a better understanding of what a militia is and how they volunteer with no training. This movie demonstrated this in a way that made a lot of sense to me and the men who volunteered were brave and fearless and I admire them.
