The person that greed affected the most was Kino. He wanted all the treasures of the pearl, and became a vicious and slightly insane man because of it. In the beginning, the pearl gave him happy thoughts, such as him and his wife getting married. He also saw through the pearl: his family affording new and clean clothes, and Coyotito receiving an education. They wanted to buy the pearl for the lowest price possible instead of being honest and paying the real price the pearl deserves. Also, they decided that since Kino is poor, they should put him in his place. Pearl buyers apparently live by a moral that is, “every man in the world functions to the best of his ability, and no one does less than his best, no matter what he may think about it. Quite apart from any reward they might get, from any word of praise, from any promotion, a pearl buyer was a pearl buyer, and the best and happiest pearl buyer was he who bought for the lowest prices,” (21). This proves that the pearl buyers are greedy in believing that the pearls they buy are magnificent, but they only want to buy them for the lowest price possible, as they are not willing to buy for a worthy price.
