What Does The Pearl Symbolize

In The Pearl by John Steinbeck the Pearl symbolizes happiness and hope but soon turns into greed and evilness. He kills four men and eventually ends up losing his child because of what the pearl brought into his life. Kino shows how much he loves his family in the beginning but towards the middle you don’t see it as much and at the end he shows how much he regrets the things he’s done. Steinbeck uses the pearl to symbolize joy and a new life in the beginning of the book. Once they found the pearl it showed the excitement and happiness that it brung to Kino and Juana. They knew from there that they would be rich and they would have things that they couldn’t imagine having. When Kino found the pearl he knew his life was going to change for himself and his family. The pearl is basically their light right now. It expands Kino’s knowledge of what he can have for himself and his family.
Kino was doing everything he could to keep this pearl and get money. Everybody wanted this pearl and anybody would do anything to get this pearl but Kino wouldn’t let go of it and was only thinking of himself. Kino was selfish at this point I think because he wasn’t seeing everything, only himself. Violence was now taking over Kino and he didn’t even hesitate to do bad things. They way Kino thought he could do all this bad things just lead him on to do more bad things. It was like a drug that he couldn’t get away from. The pearl was their light but their darkness also. Kino started to do things for the pearl not for his family or himself. Once Juana noticed that this pearl was no good she tried telling him but he didn’t want to believe her. He wouldn’t let go of this pearl for his family. That is the opposite of what he was thinking at the beginning of the book. When he heard the song of family and now he’s hearing these songs about evil and bad things but he’s not doing anything about
