From homes, to basements, even hidden chambers within walls. Being trapped in an apartment that was bolted and locked from the outside. The risks were known, but that didn't stop them from lending him a helping hand. To have people look out for you like that , there's no way to explain that.
Luck is an amazing thing. There were many situations where something should have killed Szpilman. He was almost sent to a concentration camp, but was saved by a Jewish man working as a police guard at the very last second. When he was in the streets in the middle of the night, he had to drop to the ground and play dead, while Nazi soldiers marched by. Even when the bag that was holding the weapons at the bottom, if that guard had gone just a little further towards the bottom, he would've been a dead man.
There were plenty of situations and reactions that saved Szpilman, where he should have died. To be talented is a gift, but to have your life spared because of a talent, that's a blessing. Most people wouldn't have helped him in his time of need, but his friends and fellow musicians were a big help. Szpilman had luck on his side, but it wasn't normal luck, it was something much greater. In the end, he was able to continue doing what he loved, and lived a long
