The Black Death, or as most people know it today as The Plague, killed more than 20 million people in Europe and Asia in the Late Middle Ages. This horrific disease affected all aspects of life during the time. The population decreased by more than 60 percent. The Black Death got its name from the black boils that oozed blood and pus from all of its victims. These were called "buboes" and appeared black on the skin. Since the plague killed more than one-third of Europe's population, there was a labor shortage which in turn, also lead to an economic downfall. After people began recognizing that the plague had out broken, life changed drastically. "People abandoned their friends and family, fled cities, and shut themselves off from the world" (brown.edu). The crisis was so bad that they even stopped having funerals because so many people were dying and they could not keep track. They would just throw people into a mass grave which became known as a "plague pit." "The presence of such a large burial site - which included both male and female adults as well as 27 children - suggests the community was overwhelmed by Black Death and left unable to cope with the number of people who died" (telegraph.co.uk). "The archaeologist examined differences in survivorship and mortality risk between the pre- and post-Black Death populations of London. The results of this study suggest that health of the population improved after this epidemic" (technology.org). Because of the Plague, human bodies began to adapt to the disease and people born at the end of the plague were more immune to it because their parents passed down strong genes to them (livescience.com). This made people live longer after the plague. Before the plague the average male lived to an average of 31 years old (news.bbc.co.uk). However, now the average male lives to about 76 years old
