I learned that there were many local uprisings that had made Pilate’s position in Judea dangerous during the time of Christ’s trial. However, I did not know much more about the rebellions until reading Maier’s book which helped me to understand that the revolts had formed from religious arguments. This in fact, allowed me to feel the hostile relationship between Pilate and all the Jewish religious leaders who were demanding Christ’s crucifixion. I also found out that I thought was interesting is that those who were Roman bureaucrats who had been under the support of Sejanus was in constant fear of losing not just their position, but their lives as well. Knowing the circumstances of others not only adds more tension to the trial and crucifixion of Jesus but also the ways Jesus deals with the Romans. Even though, Rome was protected the position of the Romans was in danger. It first starts with someone coming up to Pilate and telling them about this crazy man John the Baptist and how he is proclaiming that the Messiah is coming soon, and they are telling Pilate not worry and that’s not a big deal but to keep an eye out for more craziness. Then Pilate hears about this man named Jesus and how he is rising people up from the dead and performing these miracles. Good Friday comes around and Pilate is going through a couple of trials before he tries Jesus. At first, Pilate is confused on why they would send Jesus to him because he doesn’t seem like anything bad, then he notices that Jesus is from Galilee and he sends him to Hared. However, Jesus gets sent back to Pilate. Then everyone is telling Pilate to crucify Jesus and if you don’t you will be punished by Creaser, Pilate allows them to crucify him so he wouldn’t have to deal with this situation anymore and almost mediately regrets his decision. Then the Sabbath happens and nothing really happens that day but Easter comes and they come up to him saying Jesus is gone and immediately Pilate knows that is impossible because Jesus should be there.
