In 1940 British author Graham Greene wrote The Power and the Glory, which focuses on a drunkard Catholic priest’s journey through Mexico during a period in which the Mexican government did not allow Catholicism. The novel experiences with controversial topics such a Catholic priest who is a drunk and has a child and the persecution of Catholics in Mexico. Because of the controversy Greene published The Power and the Glory as The Labyrinthine Ways in the United States, so the book would not upset conservative Catholics and so that the novel would have a more appealing title to those in the United States. The police ravage through the village but find no mark of the priest. The Lieutenant asks a soldier if he has “found nothing suspicious?”. The soldier responds that he has not, so the Lieutenant orders the soldiers to continue looking. This episode shows the desperation of the Lieutenant to find the priest and his desire to stop a Catholic uprising against the state. The Lieutenant announces to the village that there is a reward of seven hundred pesos for the priest, but no one says anything. He then ordered all the men to come forward, and he then comes face to face with the priest, who is hiding in the village, but the Lieutenant is unaware. When the Lieutenant asks the priest his name and his marital status, he says, “Montez” and that Maria, the woman that he has a child with, is his wife. The Lieutenant continues to question the priest, but then once their child points to the priest as her father, the questioning ends. This confrontation shows the blindness of the Lieutenant. Although the Lieutenant has the priest within his grasp, he does not know that he is the priest because the priest deceives the Lieutenant.
