Gazing Through Another Mind: A Peer into Outrospection
In the video “The Power of Outrospection” by Roman Krznaric, it claims that leaving our comfortable knowledge spaces, especially as time and spatial scales expand through technology and globalization, is required for a more understanding, accepting, and collaborated world. The art of empathy can not only enrich one’s own life, but also help to create a social change.
In the idea of introspection, you focus on having self empathy to better one’s self by finding yourself inside your mind. Outrospection is a whole different idea. Outrospection focuses on finding yourself, who you are, and what you’ll do with your life by leaving
your old mindset and understanding the world through another person’s eyes. “Empathy isn’t just something that expands your moral universe, empathy is something that can make you a more creative thinker, improve your relationships, and can create the human bonds that make life worth living. Empathy is also about social change” (Krznaric). The concept of empathy means more than just affective empathy. Instead of mirroring the other person’s emotions, and not fully understanding how they feel, take their life into perspective.
Empathy is “about understanding their world view, their beliefs, the fears, the experiences that shape how they look at the world, and how they look at themselves” (Krznaric). We give people labels, and we judge them. Highly empathetic people look passed these labels by discovering their curiosity about others and their views. Also, highly empathetic people tend to be very sensitive listeners and make themselves vulnerable.
We normally appoint the feeling of empathy with the poor and marginalized, the ones at the bottom of the social ladder, but we should broaden the idea of who we empathize. People in power also have different ways of thinking, and a different perspective on the world. Once we have empathy for them, the world can develop strategies for social, economic, and political conversions.
Overall, outrospection is a way of getting to know oneself by developing relationships and empathetic thinking with others. Krznaric does not see empathy as a way of feeling mournful to the ones who are of lower power in society, but as a way of finding yourself by looking at someone elses life and analyzing their beliefs and views of the world. Compassionate thinking is an approach to expand social impact, overthrow stereotypes, and make a change.
