If I was approached about by someone or a group about embodying the principles of a Benedictine in their Christian life today, I would tell them “Ora et lobora,” (Prayer is work and work is prayer). I would let them know that even though a monks life may seem transparent and simplistic it is still very difficult and requires great discipline.
I have great respect for the Benedictine way in their thought process that prayer is work and work is prayer. Having that thought process is totally what I believe in too. I believe if we as Christians are going to grow in faith then we need to spend time and develop a relationship with God. If we don’t surround ourselves with other believers, get in the word with the Bible and most importantly pray then how can we grow in our personal relationship with Him?
In monasteries there is a lot required. There is a lot of daily structure and that which helps them with a life of balance. I believe in this Benedictine way when it comes to this because having discipline can give you direction, growth, and oneness with God. I really think by embracing the routines in our spiritual lives would help us grow to see God as the Father.
In today’s society we want to take the easy way; for example if something breaks something then today we throw it away and get a new one but Benedictine way would try to fix it and repair it. They respect and honor what they have. I love that they treat everything as if it were Gods; as we all should. This world would be a better place if we treated it with respect because in return we would be showing God that we are good stewards of what he given us.
In so many ways I would I would love to see parishioners, churches and congregations adopt the Benediction way when it come to scripture reading, dedicated worship space, gathered prayer, and individual prayer. I could only imagine if this was done everyday. This world would be more at peace because folks would see more with the eyes of
