The Problem We All Live with (1964)
This document is a painting which has been painted in 1964. It’s one of the most famous paintings in the sixties all over the world because it was one of the first paintings which have denounced the violence of the Segregation. Norman Rockwell, an American illustrator, was involved in the desegregation and by this painting, aimed at make Americans aware that Segregation is based on wrong ideas such as the superiority of whites on blacks. His most famous masterpiece, which is here, is entitled The problem with all live with. The word problem means Segregation. Thus, it deals with the issue of school racial integration. We are obviously chocked by the way the Segregation is embodies. Therefore, it would interesting, in a first part, to highlight the opposition between black and white thought the girl and other elements of the document and then to show how this painting can make people react against Segregation.

At first, we are obviously attracted by the young black girl who is in the middle of the painting. She is wearing a white skirt and with chooses. That highlights the fact that she is black. The color might have been used to show his innocence. She might have been not aware that a black-color skin is considered as bas in the American society during the 60’s. The girl embodies a whole population who is the target of prejudices, insults or even violences. For instance, in her left-hand, she does have briefcases, a ruler and some pencils. She must go to school. However, she seems to be impeaching by the local population; must be majority white people because of the smashed tomato which is on the bottom of the wall. Moreover, the slag word “nigger” underlines the awful ideas that Americans have of blacks. Therefore, the girl embodies the black community who is every day the target of insults and impeaches to live like normal persons so as going to school, have a decent wages and so on.

    Two relationships of power are depicted in the painting entitled “Virgin Luxuries”: sexual power and physical power. In the first panel of the painting, a well dressed white man embraces a female African-American woman, presumably a slave. The way in which enslaved woman gazes admiringly - somewhat praisingly - into the white man’s eyes and the way in which she submissively entwines herself around him illustrates the white man’s sexual power over the black woman. In a parallel scene, a white slave owner is shown aggressively beating his slave with a cane. The white man’s expression is vivid and his stance is open and menacing.     At 1st glance this piece does look like a photograph, even a painting, but this series is a work of mixed-media layered one on top of the other in a box. Yet this assemblage of random found objects, with the artists handiwork, imagination, and tender loving care, overflows its rather smaller and into the space with a powerful message.     There are two major dilemmas that appear throughout the 1960s and our current time.
