The intended audience for the propaganda I have chosen would most likely be men over the age of eighteen. While this may have been the intended audience many boys lied about their age to fight in the war. It was so effective boys as young as fourteen were convinced to fight and possibly die for a cause they
saw on a poster. The intended audience of many posters were also women, however the posters below target only men which could be a disadvantage. This would be true if the germans did not do the same thing and only target men to fight in the war. (Historyextra)
Propaganda relies on symbols and people's emotion to be effective. While words can be very convincing, images paint a picture in the viewer's mind and bring out emotion. The pictures used by both sides would bring out emotion from the viewer which would make them want to fight. The emotion would vary but it was usually a feeling of nationalism, or hate for the other side. The US government did not want to use propaganda but it was so effective that they said that what they were doing was not propaganda. While neither side wants to admit that what they are doing is propaganda its proven effectiveness made it essential to winning the war. (Wikipedia)
Showing the flaws in propaganda is simple. Propaganda is obviously out of proportion and untrue. It is obvious that eagles are not larger than ships and that the Germans are not simply holding their flag and winning.. If I had to create a rebuttal to the propaganda I would point out these facts. I would make a poster showing the elements of propaganda as they really are. The US propaganda would be changed to show a small eagle rather than a large one and the Nazi poster would show people fighting in a war as it actually would look.
