Depression, anxiety, suicide—these are some of the many symptoms that come about from conversion therapy of homosexuals. Conversion therapy is an unethical practice because it is unregulated, unnecessary, and even dangerous. People in support of conversion therapy have convinced themselves that homosexuality is a sin, mental illness, and even a disorder, despite having experts prove that it is none of these. Although some cases of this practice have been proven “successful,” the practice has been deemed to be harmful to those individuals affected. As reported by author J. G. Ford in his 2001 written text called, Healing Homosexuals, homosexuality is a “psychological or developmental disorder” and that homosexual relationships are “undesirable, unhealthy, and unhappy.” Ford also mentioned in his writing that homosexuals are “defective, broken, sinful, and unacceptable.” Valerie Canady proved Ford’s beliefs false in an article written in 2015. The article included a report called “Ending Conversion Therapy: Supporting and Affirming LGBTQ Youth” and in that report, it is said that “Conversion therapy…is a practice not supported by credible evidence…” meaning that even though cases have been reported saying they were successful in converting mentally ill homosexuals, they are proven not credible by almost all experts. Even though most cases are not credible, the practice still continues today with unregulated treatments. Writer Laura C. Hein in her article, “Reparative Therapy: The Adolescent, the Psych Nurse, and the Issues” written in 2010 state, “…treatment approaches used in the 1950s are still being used.” Examples of treatment methods found in Hein’s 2010 article include, “electric shocks to the torso, hands, or genitals…exorcism…restraints…gender modification therapy.” As stated in NCLR’s article “#Born Perfect” written in 2016 all of these types of treatments used in conversion therapy have led to patients developing serious psychological problems such as “depression, guilt, helplessness…shame…hostility…” just to name of few.
