According to “The New York Times” article by Richard Perez Pena, the main idea about the article is the shooting that happened in Roseburg, …show more content…
Oregon in October of 2015. People asked questions because they wanted to know what happened and they wanted answers. So, one of the questions asked was “ What do law enforcement authorities say about gun control?” A quote from the article say “In general, big-city police chiefs are more likely to support gun control, and small-town chiefs and sheriffs are more likely to oppose it. Those in the Northeast are more likely than those in the South and West to favor it.” So, police chiefs in a city like New York City love the idea of gun control. On the other hand, police chiefs in a city like Providence, Rhode Island despise of it. Not all small cities oppose of gun control and not all large cities want there to be gun laws in there there cities mainly because they want to trust the citizens that live in their city and because the police swear they have everything under control.
Although gun control could have cons, the pros are the more efficient because it’ll help the community. One pro for having gun control is that the gun control laws would reduce the deaths due to firearms. According to the article “Gun Control-ProCon.org”, gun related deaths have been the 12th leading cause of death, “Firearms were the 12th leading cause of all deaths, representing 1.3% of total deaths topping liver disease, hypertension, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as deaths from fires, drowning, and machinery accidents.” Another pro for having gun control is for women's protection. In the article “Gun Control-ProCon.org” five women have been killed everyday due to firearms. “A woman's risk of being murdered increases 500% if a gun is present during a domestic dispute.” (Gun Control-ProCon.org). More women have been killed by their partners than US soldiers have in the iraq and Afghanistan wars between 2001 and 2012. It is still wrong to kill someone but if it is for your protection, safety and or self defense then i guess that is an exception.
As we seen in the previous paragraph, pros are the advantages for something and in this case for gun control.
So the cons would be a disadvantage for it. A con for having gun control is that it would not prevent criminals from obtaining guns and or breaking the law. According to the article Gun-control.procon, John R. Lott, Jr. states "The problem with such [gun control] laws is that they take away guns from law-abiding citizens, while would-be criminals ignore them." This statement means that law enforcements take away guns from people/citizens that a registered to have a gun but i guess they let the criminals keep their firearms so they can commit crimes, maybe the law enforcements don’t know that they are criminals. From the same, same passage they talk about Chicago and there problems. It states “Despite Chicago's ban on gun shops, shooting ranges, assault weapons, and high capacity magazines, in 2014 Chicago had 2,089 shooting victims including at least 390 murders. Approximately 50,000 guns were recovered by police in Chicago between 2001 and Mar. 2012. The guns came from all 50 states, and more than half came from outside of Illinois.” This is horrible because kids are involved and they live in the areas where they end up having a shoot
out.
Based on research that was conducted about gun control laws it is apparent that many citizens of the United States of America agree with the current terms of gun control laws. It was shown that out of 1001 people 46% support gun control laws, 92% support ex tended background checks and so on. In conclusion gun laws do not work in the United States because gun violence is still going to happen, it shouldn't but it would. I say this because gun violence happens across the country and is televised on the news. Even teens are getting killed by guns because they are either involved with the crime, gangs or the wrong people or they are hit by a bullet when there are shoot outs. So, gun control should be effective in the country so that that children and even adults are not killed by guns.
