In addition to the right to vote and the Civil Rights Act, a couple of great organizations were started. The National Organization for Women (NOW) and the National Women’s Political Caucus were founded. Congress expanded the EEOC powers to include women’s rights and the Higher Education Act was passed which banned gender discrimination in federal funding. The monumental case of Roe v. Wade gave women the right to an abortion and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) as passed by Congress. As we move on, the focus should continue to be on creating equality for all women. Strong empowering women such as Serena Williams and Rhonda Rousey represent the complexity of women; strong and still beautiful. The focus of the women’s movement should continue to be to open new opportunities for women and improve the role of all women in society. For example, I think that possibility of having the first female President in the next election is inspiring. Just as President Obama’s election was a step towards equality for African American’s a woman in the White House could do the same for women. While women have entered the political arenas and are in increasingly more professional jobs the fight to conquer sexism is not over. I see the struggle in unity women while simultaneously allowing different and unique opinions to be
