The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011 has risen our awareness on using nuclear energy and we have since begun to re-evaluate the possibility of promoting the use of the technology widely. Despite the potential dangers it can induce, there are some benefits it has brought which are worth noticing.
In the economic aspect, the operation cost of nuclear energy is relatively lower than the other energy such as natural gas and other renewable energy. According to CLP Power Hong Kong Limited., the cost of nuclear power is fifty cents per kilo-Watt-hour which is the lowest in all kinds of energy except coal that costs twenty three cents per kilo-Watt-hour. The Secretary for the Environment, Mr. Edward Yau points out that the price of the …show more content…
Since after using of the nuclear fuel, there would be some radioactive wastes produced. If the wastes are disposed inappropriately, that would lead to the leakage of the radioactive element such as radioactive iodine which would cause thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, hence increase the risk of thyroid cancer, especially to young kids. It also included the radioactive caesium that may lead to burns, acute radiation sickness, increase of having cancers and even death. However, Hong Kong Nuclear Investment Co. Ltd (2010) claims that small amount of waste would be made when using atomic energy. The remaining would be held in an isolated storage so that people would not be easily have content with those wastes. Therefore nuclear energy is safe for use.
In conclusion, the advantages of nuclear energy is outweigh the disadvantages. And it may be a sustainable way for electronic production compare to the traditional method and other renewable energy. Although there are some limitations in it, we believe we would find the way to address or we could explore another better energy source in the
