The amendment I chose is also most recent; the 27th amendment. I find it to be rather interesting because it was originally proposed in 1789 along with the Bill of Rights yet it was not ratified until just over 200 years later in 1992. The amendment states, “No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened” (History, Arts, and Achieves, n.d.). Or, to paraphrase, any votes made by Congress to increase or decrease its own wages will not take place until the after the subsequent congressional election.…
Even though the bill C-51 is more likely a violation of freedom and can be used as a power of dictatorship, but the purpose of Harper’s government were good: protect Canadian residents from the danger of terrorism, by setting certain groups of people on the watching list, it could reduce the rate of terrorism and crime activities. So people could living in a society which is safer, more peaceful.…
At what cost are citizens willing to go in exchange for protection? With the increasing amount of terrorist attacks such as the Orlando Shootings, the Paris Attacks, the Brussels Bombings, etc. occurring around the world with no end in sight, it is not a coincidence that paranoia and fear has risen as well. With more fear in the population, more political pressure is placed on the shoulders of the government, which Canada is no exception to. Due to this, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservatives has decided to enact Bill C-51, the anti-terror legislation, which essentially allows police, federal institutions and CSIS further powers to gather info and detain “potential terrorists”. This may sound reasonable on the outside, but the…
What would you do if the government denied your rights, threatened to harm your land, and threatened your primary source of water? Would you let them get away with it, or would you fight for what is right? The Dakota Access Pipeline is said to be “the safest and most environmentally sensitive way to transport crude oil from domestic wells to American consumers” (Dakota Access Pipeline Facts). It’s a pipeline that was built under Lake Oahe, which is located upstream of the Sioux tribes’ land. It would also would save a lot of money and energy to transfer oil across the nation. The Dakota Access Pipeline should have been stopped because the Sioux tribes have rights, the pipeline could damage the environment, and the government needs to care…
Bernie Sanders is one of the presidential candidates for 2015 through 2016. He is still in the race with Trump and Hillary. He’s given many speeches that influenced a lot of people. He’s given many promises that have many people voting for him. People really like Bernie for a lot of reasons such as when Bernie was giving his speech he raised his hand a bird just landed on his finger. Isn't that cool!…
The Fathers of Confederation conceived of the Senate as a “chamber of sober second thought.” However, almost ever since its creation, as the unelected arm of the legislature, people have suggested ways in which to reform the upper house. Concerns of illegitimate representation, party loyalty, and patronage are the main reasons the argument for change continues. This paper aims to review a couple of recent reform proposals, and then argue, leaving constitutional practicality behind, that the Senate should receive a major overhaul in how it is formed and represented.…
Prop 51,gives more money to charter schools but Californians already pay $2 billion each year on state school bonds therefore, If this proposition is passed this could cost an additional $500 million each year, money the state can’t afford. What truly matters is the attendance rate, if more students are present then schools get more money without having to increase taxes. People should vote no on Proposition 51 for one reason and that is taxes because California is already in debt and paying back taxes is a major issue. The annual budget is more than the schools combined, these schools are required to pay back or they may lose the education for students such as books, desks, chairs, and most of all, facilities, and schools have to do funds and…

House Bill 405, also known as gag laws, are a “variety of laws meant to curb undercover investigations of agricultural operations, often large dairy, poultry and pork farms (Runyon).” These laws have stirred lots of controversy due to it possibly not being legal to pass and its ability to halt the work of certain movements. Many people such as animal rights activists have opposed the bill while farmers and major dairy lobbyist have sided with it. As more states decide on this both sides push to get the bills passed or repealed. Ag gag laws should not be passed because it infringes on the rights given by the first amendment, violates food safety, and supports animal abuse.…
If the Keystone XL pipeline is built, thousands of creatures may relocate or die because of it. The Keystone pipeline is a real pipeline that will transport thousands of gallons of crude tar sands oil a day from Canada to the southern United States. It may leak and cause the environment to be hurt. Many people believe that it will benefit the United States and Canada in many ways, but many people believe the other side of it and think it should not be built because of the risks. It has many benefits, but there is too much of a risk involved in the building of the keystone pipeline. The pipeline should not be built because it is bad for the environment, bad for the economy, and may go through native lands.…
At the end of the nineteenth century the United States seemed to be racing forward in many areas, such as technological advancement, more efficient manufacturing, modernizing transportation, and of course, making money. America was, on the surface, improving greatly; underneath however, there were many problems including corrupt businesses and a growing lower class stricken by poverty. In 1900 to 1920 the Progressive Reform Movement swept the nation; progressive reformers rallied for equal treatment and better working conditions; the federal government adopted regulations that attempted to satisfy the wishes of the reformer; both groups had successes and limitations that ultimately led to an overall beneficial effect on the nation.…

The “Affordable Care Act of 2010” also known as “Obamacare” or “Health Care Reform Act of 2010” is a universal healthcare plan that was designed to allow Americans to be able to get quality health insurance that people would be able to afford, and to cut U.S health care spending down as well. Many Americans debated about whether or not it was beneficial for everyone or just certain people, so there are many advantage and disadvantages for Americas due to this reform.…
