Mesa Verde National Park is a very large park that is located in Montezuma County in Colorado and used to be the home of the Anasazi people many years ago. It is located in the southwestern corner of Colorado (Anderson) and since Mesa Verde is essentially a plateau, it got the name Mesa Verde, which translates to green table in Spanish (Anderson). This area was populated with juniper trees and and pinons and all of that greenery encouraged the Anasazi people to make their homes on top of the plateau and to farm the land (Anderson). The island of the Dominican Republic has a wide range of biodiversity due to its isolation, tourists bringing in nonnative fauna and flora, and most of all due to the range of biomes within their country. The natural biomes that occur in the Dominican Republic vary from very dry biomes to very wet biomes. The most common biome in the Dominican Republic is subtropical coniferous forests, due to low levels of precipitation and adequate temperature variability. These trees have needle-leafs in order to adapt to drought. This type of biome shares some of the flora and fauna common to tropical and subtropical savannas, dry broadleaf forests, as well as moist broadleaf forests. We have had some influential people that have helped steer us in the ways that we know diversity today. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was very influential in changing the way many white Americans looked at African- Americans during the 1960’s. Long before Dr. King marched on Selma, Alabama and gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C., Abraham Lincoln tried to change the culture of America by freeing the slaves in 1865 with the Emancipation Proclamation. However, one hundred years later, African-Americans still did not have the same rights as white Americans. They could not ride in the front of the bus, enter the same door of a restaurant, drink from the same water fountain, or attend the same schools as whites. Because of Dr. King’s determination and leadership, the culture of America began to change. In 2008, we saw the greatest example of this change with the election of the first African-American President of the United States, Barack Obama.…
Samples of plants were obtained during the campus tour. In order survive in the harsh climate of deserts, plants must adapt in function, reproduction, support, and defense. Although plants on campus are watered frequently, they live in a mostly xeric environment. Three types of cacti were observed: organ pipe, prickly pear, and saguaro. The organ pipe contains no leaves and has narrow stems that carry out photosynthesis and store water. Neither the saguaro nor prickly pear cacti have leaves, but both have a highly modified form of a leaf called the spine. Spines are highly modified leaves because they do not carry out photosynthesis. Spines protect the plant from predation and prevent water loss as stomata in leaves are highly susceptible to water loss. Fruit trees like the sour orange must grow deep roots to store an obtain water. Flowers observed had small leaves and are not bright green in color. The leaves have a waxier cuticle to help seal in water. The observation that the investigation will be focused on the size of leaves or modified leaves.…
Animal shelters exist in counties across the country in order to manage a problem that seems impossible to solve: overpopulation among cats and dogs. Overpopulation occurs when animals of the same species become successful reproducers. Cats are especially good reproducers. According to PETA, in just seven years, one female cat and her offspring will generate 370,000 cats. This staggering statistic exhibits the ramifications of an owner choosing not to get their cat or dog neutered or spayed. The burden of these offspring then lies on the shelter to house and take care of the animals until someone can provide a permanent home.
